#24 Japanese garbled when exported
Hi! :)
There is one bug I have come across in trying to use TextCite with Japanese as the source text and translating into English. When I export the Japanese it ends up garbled. Also the export does not include any "Kanji" or Chinese characters. I am not a programmer and wish I could fix this myself. Would it be possible to have this fixed?
TextCite is an excellent piece of work. I am really looking forward to further progress with TextCite.

Howdy Darren,
A couple of issues. Are you exporting in PDF format? If so, the issue might have to do with the FreeSerif and FreeSans fonts that TextCite uses during the export process. These fonts may lack the Kanji characters, I'm not sure.
Do the characters come out garbled when you right-click on a citation in table view and choose "Copy Text" and paste to another application (e.g. Word)?
If you export to Word (RTF), is there garbling in the exported file?
Finally, you might want to attach your CiteBook to the bug report (using the Upload and Attach a File feature at the bottom of the screen), or else mail me the CiteBook at enorvelle (at) users.sourceforge.net ... I don't know how to enter kanji (or katakana/hiragana, for that matter), so I can't test the issue on my own.

Thank you for getting back so quickly! :)
After exporting to rtf as well as copying and pasting the Japanese source text into Word I can confirm that the Japanese appears correctly.
So the garbled Japanese (with no 'Kanji' or Chinese Characters) only occurs when exporting into pdf format.
I have created a test TextCite book with one entry (source Japanese and translation in English with an English comment) which I will upload with this message.
Actually, the pdf issue is not so urgent. I will be almost entirely exporting as a rtf file. At first I thought the Japanese was not appearing properly in rtf as well. But I discovered the rtf files were opening up in the Mac TextEdit application and so the footnote with the Japanese was not appearing. Once I opened up the rtf in Word the Japanese appeared correctly. By the way, I would be great if there was another choice in export where you could export both the source text AND the translation (and possibly the comment) body of the text of the rtf. At the moment the choice is only for the translation text in the body and the source text added as a footnote.
Erik, CiteText is gearing up to being a wonderful application. Great work. When I was in the Windows world, I had been using IdeaMason. If CiteText could grow and surpass something like IdeaMason for the Mac that would be a dream come true and an application I would happily pay for.
