For me one of the main points of using bibtex is to have one (or more) centrally stored database files which I can use for all my projects. I use JabRef to manage my .bib files and I store them in a local TEXMF tree (registered in my MiKTeX distribution). As far as compiling is concerned, this works perfectly well.
However, while this setup is very convenient in one regard, it considerably hampers the workflow in TeXstudio. The reason is that the autocompletion for the \cite{} command -- which, by the way, is really great when the .bib file is contained in the same directory as the source file -- doesn't work for .bib files in my TEXMF tree. Although MiKTeX knows where the .bib files are, TeXstudio doesn't and as far as I can tell there is no way to make it see the files.
Autocompletion for external bibtex databases would certainly make my life easier and I think it would be a worthwhile addition in general. In fact, I can imagine that I'm not the only one who uses bibtex as I do.
PS: I wanted to say that I've been using TeXstudio for many years now. In my opinion, it is by far the best LaTeX editor out there and I'm constantly recommending it to other people. I don't mean to be a kiss ass here, I just think that you should give credit where credit is due. And a good amount of credit is due for the TeXstudio devs. Keep up the good work guys!

I have the same problem.
I use -include-directory in the bibtex options to find my bib files, which are stored in a central place.
Naturally, TexStudio is not aware of that and does not find them.
I can work around it by using a relative path in \bibliography{} that leads from the current directory to the bib files.
But it would be nicer if I could put this path into the TexStudio options once and for all.
We've recently added support for explicit bibtex search paths. It's included in the 2.7 beta. You'll find it in Config -> Advanced editor -> Additional Search Paths.
