the use logic of this "dialog" is odd/botched, as clicking on one of the symbols changes the input of the unicode code instead of inserting the selected charcter into the text.

maybe to clarify what has been reported.
The reporter has probably clicked on the symbols in the table, and they have been inserted into the unicode editline directly.

I test "2222". In Linux, the table is large enough and looks good. On Mac, when input first "2" and second "2", the table is OK; when type third and fourth "2", the input box looks strange, characters overlap.
Possibly a Qt 5.6 bug. Can you please try the following versions to check if happens with Qt 5.6 but not with Qt 5.5?
https://sourceforge.net/projects/texstudio/files/texstudio/TeXstudio%20development/texstudio-2.10.9-dev-hg5929-osx-qt5.6.0.zip/download
https://sourceforge.net/projects/texstudio/files/texstudio/TeXstudio%202.10.8/texstudio-2.10.8-osx-qt5.5.zip/download
I tried two versions you mentioned. Both have the same bug.
2.10.8-osx-qt5.5 has another bug, When I use "quick tabular...." in the menu, TXS shows "quick array".
2.10.9 & 2.10.10 work well.

okay, then the basic problem is that the lineedit is too small on mac.
the overlapping is fixed
