After upgrading to Version 2.9.4 (from version 2.8.8) on Windows 7, Build and View is not working any more. Instead of building the PDF and showing the internal viewer I get this error:

Error: One command expansion invalid.

I don't recall modifying anything to the Build & View settings on the older verison 2.8.8, they must be the default:

Build & View: Asymptote PDF Chain
Default Compiler: PdfLaTeX
Default Viewer: Internal PDF Viewer (Embedded)
PDF Viewer: Internal PDF Viewer (Embedded)
Default Bibliography Tool: BibTeX

    Do you use Asymptote?

The default for "Build & View" is "Compile & View"

No idea, I never touched any of those options, I don't even know what Asymptote means.

I also checked the same thing on my Ubuntu machine and its also Asymptote PDF Chain, so it must have been by default. Its also 2.9.4 but it works fine on Ubuntu. I noticed this problem occurred from 2.9.x onwards, because when I removed it on my Windows 7 machine and re-installed 2.8.8 it worked fine.

have you tried with the default setting "Compile & view" ?

Will try again, because I have to uninstall 2.8.8 and reinstall 2.9.4 again.

I have uninstalled 2.8.8 and reinstalled 2.9.4. Default Build & View was still Asymptote PDF Chain, which used to work on 2.8.8 but now gave the error again on 2.9.4.

Changed the Build & View to Compile & View and it now worked.

So it seems that the Asymptote PDF Chain has been broken from 2.9.x onwards on Windows (on Ubuntu it still works fine).

There has been a bug that may result in changes of commands (fix: hg 5076 (6029429f1229)).

I suspect that this was the original reason for your problem.

I had this issue with TeXstudio 4.2.1. A change to the configuration fixed it.
Options < Configure TexStudio < Build
    set default compiler to txs:///pdflatex
I had set the default compiler to txs:///xelatex to handle Thai language characters.
Changing it back fixed the problem. I don't really understand why, but try that.
