Change the name of musicNotation <http://www.tei-c.org/release/doc/tei-p5-doc/en/html/ref-musicNotation.html> in model.physDescPart to something more in keeping with its semantics. To be more similar to other elements in model.physDescPart, the element could be renamed musicNotationDesc (preferred) or musicDesc.

I don't think <musicDesc> would be appropriate, since this element does not describe the music (=performance) but rather the way it's notated in this manuscript. I can see the argument therefore for <musicNotationDesc> though this is quite a mouthful and would cause problems for existing documents. If part of the rationale is to allow for <musicNotation> to be used elsewhere with some other semantics, that would further confound the confusion, so I would much prefer to leave this particular sleeping doc snoozing.

    Dear Lou,

You make an important point. Renaming would cause backward compatibility problems and using <musicNotation> elsewhere could cause further confusion. However, we do see a need for marking the position of music notation within the text and allow for a description in place and pointers to external objects/representations (as suggested in FR 3086726). Although <musicNotation> would have been a good element name in this case, we are suggesting <musicalNotation> as alternative, since "music notation" and "musical notation" are synonyms, as it is evident from several sources, including the OED under "notation" 6.a.(b)

In the other ticket tei:music has now been settled on because it has the possibility of embedding all forms of music rather than just notation. Does this change the opinions on what to call this element? Remembering, of course, that this element is still embedded in the manuscript description metadata and so it is very unlikely for this to contain real 'music' rather than musicNotation. (Immediately a potential use case springs to mind where I handwrite a birthday card manuscript which also contains embedded in it one of those annoying musical recordings when opened. *shudder* Let's pretend I didn't mention that.)

I would still argue for musicNotationDesc however much of a mouthful so that the element comes in parallel with all the other *Desc elements inside physDescPart.
