Why "indirect" and not just "any representation via markup or"?
The section is already quite dense as it is, so instead of introducing a new term, I think it is best to provide coherence by linking back to "represented indirectly via markup" The words "or use" can be deleted, for why represent the code points without using them? The term "definition" gives the idea that you can decide yourself how to define these, and this is not true.

I see your point: if you represent something with something else, it is always indirect, no? Then I think "indirectly" should be removed as well. I just echoed this.
