I downloaded and ran TDT ver 3.0.6.0 on my WinXP Pro
machine. After the initial scan, I asked it to run a scan,
and it locked up while doing that scan. I saw that there
was a tdt_crash.txt file in the C:\ folder, and tried to look
at it, but got an unusual file access error, so I figured I'd
better reboot. When I did that, the system failed to
boot; got just pass the WinXP racing logo thing and just
stopped. When I booted from the CD to try to repair the
system, it wouldn't even boot correctly that way until I
asked it to do a full re-install. (The Repair Console did
work, but I couldn't figure out how to repair the system.
Copied a bunch of files over from another OS image, but
to no avail.)
If it matters, my C: drive is NTFS formatted, but I'm not
running any encrypted folders or anything odd like that.
I have about 2200 music files in 193 folders, and a
bunch of them had filenames that were too long for my
iRiver. I had the Visual Studio.NET installed on this
system, so I was covered for .NET 1.1.
So I did a full reinstall of WinXP Pro, reinstalled a few
apps, and tried running TDT again. It crashed again at
the same point, and I got a warning that my OS files
were being overwritten. I had used MS's wonderful
backup tools to save a copy of the system files, so I
had it restore those system files, and it rebooted once
so I thought I was in the clear. But when I rebooted the
next day, it wouldn't boot, and when I tried to run the
Repair Console, it wouldn't accept my admin password
as valid (I had received a warning of some sort in this
area; apparently that part of the hard disk was corrupted
this second time).
So I had to do another full reinstall of WinXP.
IMO, based on a total of 6 minutes as a TDT user (but
what an exciting 6 minutes they were!), these changes
ought to be made:
a) TDT should NOT write files into the root of the hard
disk (C:\). NO, NOT NEVER.
b) TDT ought to let you pick a place, or use the TDT
folder in Program Files.
c) Of course, a bug fix would be nice.
