Dear TCL fans, BWidget got more life in the next month due to actions of Andreas Kupries which found old patches and due to two developpers providing new functionality. I hope, you will enjoy the release 1.9.7 at: http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/tcllib/ Below are the release notes. Enjoy, Harald -------------------------------------------------------------------------- BWidget ToolKit 1.9.7 September 2013 Copyright (c) 1998-1999 UNIFIX. Copyright (c) 2001-2002 ActiveState Corp. See the file LICENSE.txt for license info (uses Tcl's BSD-style license). -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Preface: Andreas Kupries transfered the issue tracker from sourceforge to fossil and found a couple of patches which were not on my radar. Most are integrated now. Other solutions are in branches on the repository and may be in the next release if finalized by someone. Thanks to all reports, contributers and specially to Andreas ! Harald -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Highlights: Repository and issue tracker moved to fossil: http://core.tcl.tk/bwidget New features: - Allow new modifiers Shift, Cmd and ShiftCmd for menu accelerators, which is specially useful for the MAC. - xpm-to-image accepts a wider range of xpm dialects - Make loadable in save interpreter. - Add method getentry to combobox to facilitate bindings on widget Fixed bugs: - noetbook creation error box on Win7 - On Aqua, do not change menu color when changing mainframes background. - Entry widget in ttk mode raised error on keyboard tab traversal -------------------------------------------------------------------------- WHAT IS BWIDGET ? The BWidget Toolkit is a high-level Widget Set for Tcl/Tk built using native Tcl/Tk 8.x namespaces. The BWidgets have a professional look&feel as in other well known Toolkits (Tix or Incr Widgets), but the concept is radically different because everything is pure Tcl/Tk. No platform dependencies, and no compiling required. The code is 100% Pure Tcl/Tk. The BWidget library was originally developed by UNIFIX Online, and released under both the GNU Public License and the Tcl license. BWidget is now maintained as a community project, hosted by Sourceforge. Scores of fixes and enhancements have been added by community developers. See the ChangeLog file for details. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- WIDGET LIST (1.9) Simple Widgets Label Extended Label widget Entry Extended Entry widget Button Extended Button widget ArrowButton Button widget with an arrow shape. ProgressBar Progress indicator widget ScrollView Display the visible area of a scrolled window Separator 3D separator widget Manager Widgets MainFrame Manage toplevel with menu, toolbar and statusbar LabelFrame Frame with a Label TitleFrame Frame with a title ScrolledWindow Generic scrolled widget ScrollableFrame Scrollable frame containing widget PanedWindow Tiled layout manager widget ButtonBox Set of buttons with horizontal or vertical layout PagesManager Pages manager widget NoteBook Notebook manager widget Dialog Dialog abstraction with custom buttons Composite Widgets LabelEntry LabelFrame containing an Entry widget. ComboBox ComboBox widget SpinBox SpinBox widget Tree Tree widget ListBox ListBox widget MessageDlg Message dialog box ProgressDlg Progress indicator dialog box PasswdDlg Login/Password dialog box (contributed by Stephane Lavirotte) SelectFont Font selection widget SelectColor Color selection widget Commands Classes Widget The Widget base class DynamicHelp Provide help to Tk widget or BWidget DragSite Commands set for Drag facilities DropSite Commands set for Drop facilities BWidget Utilities -------------------------------------------------------------------------- INSTALLATION AND USE - On Unix Platform: Uncompress the file BWidget-<version>.tar.Z|gz To use the BWidget: - If you have uncompressed the archive file under the Tcl Library Path directory, you only need to do: % package require BWidget - If not, you have to specify the BWidget installation path in auto_path global variable: % lappend auto_path <install_path> % package require BWidget To launch the demo, you need to cd into the demo subdirectory: $ cd <install_path>/demo $ wish demo.tcl - On Windows and others Platforms: Uncompress the file BWidget-<version>.zip To use the BWidget: - If you uncompressed the archive file under the Tcl Library Path directory, you only need to do: % package require BWidget - If not, you have to specify the BWidget installation path in auto_path global variable: % lappend auto_path your_path % package require BWidget To launch the demo : Double click on demo.tcl in the demo subdirectory Distribution contains these directories: BWidget-<version> Root directory and BWidget Tcl sources BWman HTML manual pages images images used by BWidget lang Resources for language customization demo Demo sources tests BWidgets test suite -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ttk support Johann Oberdorfer has written a tile-version of BWidget consisting in theme-based parameter switching. No native windows are used on MAC or Windows. IMHO we need native widgets. It is IMHO not wise to use BWidget with Ttk due to different concepts. For the migration of my programs to Ttk, limited Ttk support is integrated in the following widgets: - ScrolledWindow, Label, Button - MainFrame (-sizegrip option) - NoteBook (only user frame) - LabelEntry, LabelFrame, PagesMgr (by Wojciech Kocjan, docs missing?) The documentation pages list the parameter differences. I do not recommend using this for new projects. To activate Ttk support, use: Widget::themed 1 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- DOCUMENTATION HTML manual pages are available in the BWman subdirectory. Point to index.html for frame version with tree navigation, or to contents.html for no frame version. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONTACTS The BWidget toolkit is downloadable on Sourceforge, at http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/tcllib/ The repository and issue tracker is on: http://core.tcl.tk/bwidget/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Changes: (Only showing changes since BWidget 1.9.6 release.) 2013-09-11 xpm2image.tcl: many issues fixed in xpm import by Mattias Hembruch. Ticket [9a8b2ee42e] 2013-08-14 * notebook.tcl: cured error in _resize, that data($p,width) is not (jet) present. Ticket [a4cbba655d]. 2013-06-28 * mainframe.tcl: Included Patch [9f67a66609] curing issues of Shift-Accellerators with Shift-Lock on Mac. Fix by Keith J.Nash [Bug-a81b7afc1e] * init.tcl: Make loadable in save interpreter. Fix by Keith J.Nash [Bug-4365a23bd3] * combobox.tcl: Add method getentry to return entry widget path for bind purposes. Patch by Michael [Patch-2340355] 2013-01-09 * widget.tcl: Bug fixed: Error 'invalid command name ".#BWidget.#ttk::entry"' arises in themed mode when an Entry widget should get focus by the tab key. The temporary widget creation fails due to the "::" in the command name of ttk widgets. Any "::" is replaced by "__" [Bug 3599955]. |

Founder of Tool Command Language to talk about Tcl Past, Present & Future Ann Arbor, MI -- August 16, 2013 -- The Tcl/Tk User Association, which is celebrating over 20 years of innovation using the Tool Command Language (Tcl), confirmed today that John Ousterhout will be a Featured Speaker at the conference in New Orleans, LA from Sept 23-27, 2013. Ousterhout is the original developer of the Tcl and Tk programming language, a combination of the Tool Command Language and the Tk graphical user interface tookit (Tk). His presentation will focus on the evolution of Tcl/Tk from its original language format created at the University of California Berkeley to the most robust and easy-to-learn dynamic programming language that seamlessly powers today's applications. He is also the author of Tcl and the Tk ToolKit (2nd Edition). "John started a revolution born out of frustration," says Clif Flynt, President, Tcl Community Association and author of Tcl/Tk: A Developer's Guide. "Before Tcl, programmers devised their own languages that were intended to be embedded into applications. By creating Tcl/Tk, John created a language for rapid prototyping that works immediately." The Tcl New and Proven user conference will feature several Tcl experts including Jeff Hobbs, Chief Technical Officer at ActiveState, Gerald Lester, creator of Tcl Web Services and a keynote speech by Karl Lehenbauer of FlightAware.com. Programmers attending the conference will learn the best practices for using Tcl's new object-oriented commands and widgets as well as seeing new applications and techniques in the fields ranging from business applications to health, aerospace and beyond. "The Tcl New & Proven User Conference will be focusing on innovation throughout the years," says Flynt. "We are very pleased to have two of the people who helped create the Tcl we know today at our 20th conference." Interested in attending the Tcl conference? Go to http://www.tcl.tk/community/tcl2013/ to register. Learn more about Tcl/Tk by visiting the Tcl Developer Xchange http://www.tcl.tk/ where you can download Tcl 8.6 and a free trial of TDK 5 (Tcl Dev Kit). ### About Tcl/Tk (http://www.tcl.tk/) Celebrating over 20 years of providing rapid prototyping, Tool Command Language (Tcl) is an open source, robust, powerful and easy-to-learn dynamic programming language ideal for today's web and desktop applications, networking, administration, and testing. Tk is a graphical user interface toolkit that enables the development of native-looking GUIs on multiple platforms such as Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. The combination of Tcl and the Tk GUI toolkit is referred to as Tcl/Tk.. The vibrant Tcl user community comes together on the Tcl Developer Xchange website hosted by ActiveState (http://www.tcl.tk/), which provides a variety of resources for programmers working with Tcl/Tk to increase their productivity and share ideas. Worldwide Tcl conferences, Tcl/Tk downloads and access to the Tcler's Wiki are all available online at the Tcl Developer Xchange. The latest books, tutorials and demos are also accessible from this site along with the Tcl core development team that steers the ongoing evolution of the language. Using fossil ticket list fields fossil ticket list reports fossil ticket show 1 | grep -v .... and the attached "fclosenah" script (using "fossil tocket change ...") I have now updated all the ticket databases for Tcllib and its siblings, i.e. deleted (*) all the tickets which did not fit with each repository. Each repository should now only have relevant tickets visible, except in the 'All Tickets' report, showing everything, including deleted tickets. ~~~~~~ (*) Set the state to 'Deleted'. [[ Notes: Abstracts and proposals are now due July 6, 2013 [+ 2 weeks] ]] 20'th Annual Tcl/Tk Conference (Tcl'2013) http://www.tcl.tk/community/tcl2013/ September 23 - 27, 2013 Bourbon Orleans Hotel New Orleans, Louisiana, USA http://www.bourbonorleans.com/ Important Dates: Abstracts and proposals due July 6, 2013 [+ 2 weeks] Notification to authors July 22, 2013 [- 2 weeks] Author materials due September 2, 2013 Tutorials Start September 23, 2013 Conference starts September 25, 2013 Email Contact: tcl...@go... Submission of Summaries Tcl/Tk 2013 will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA from September 23 - 27, 2013. The program committee is asking for papers and presentation proposals from anyone using or developing with Tcl/Tk (and extensions). Past conferences have seen submissions covering a wide variety of topics including: * Scientific and engineering applications * Industrial controls * Distributed applications and Network Managment * Object oriented extensions to Tcl/Tk * New widgets for Tk * Simulation and application steering with Tcl/Tk * Tcl/Tk-centric operating environments * Tcl/Tk on small and embedded devices * Medical applications and visualization * Use of different programming paradigms in Tcl/Tk and proposals for new directions. * New areas of exploration for the Tcl/Tk language Submissions should consist of an abstract of about 100 words and a summary of not more than two pages, and should be sent as plain text to <tclconference AT googlegroups DOT com> no later than August 5, 2013. Authors of accepted abstracts will have until September 2, 2013 to submit their final paper for the inclusion in the conference proceedings. The proceedings will be made available on digital media, so extra materials such as presentation slides, code examples, code for extensions etc. are encouraged. Printed proceedings will be produced as an on-demand book at lulu.com The authors will have 25 minutes to present their paper at the conference. The program committee will review and evaluate papers according to the following criteria: * Quantity and quality of novel content * Relevance and interest to the Tcl/Tk community * Suitability of content for presentation at the conference Proposals may report on commercial or non-commercial systems, but those with only blatant marketing content will not be accepted. Application and experience papers need to strike a balance between background on the application domain and the relevance of Tcl/Tk to the application. Application and experience papers should clearly explain how the application or experience illustrates a novel use of Tcl/Tk, and what lessons the Tcl/Tk community can derive from the application or experience to apply to their own development efforts. Papers accompanied by non-disclosure agreements will be returned to the author(s) unread. All submissions are held in the highest confidentiality prior to publication in the Proceedings, both as a matter of policy and in accord with the U. S. Copyright Act of 1976. The primary author for each accepted paper will receive registration to the Technical Sessions portion of the conference at a reduced rate. Other Forms of Participation The program committee also welcomes proposals for panel discussions of up to 90 minutes. Proposals should include a list of confirmed panelists, a title and format, and a panel description with position statements from each panelist. Panels should have no more than four speakers, including the panel moderator, and should allow time for substantial interaction with attendees. Panels are not presentations of related research papers. Slots for Works-in-Progress (WIP) presentations and Birds-of-a-Feather sessions (BOFs) are available on a first-come, first-served basis starting in August 5, 2013. Specific instructions for reserving WIP and BOF time slots will be provided in the registration information available in June 3, 2013. Some WIP and BOF time slots will be held open for on-site reservation. All attendees with an interesting work in progress should consider reserving a WIP slot. Registration Information More information on the conference is available the conference Web site (http://www.tcl.tk/community/tcl2013/) and will be published on various Tcl/Tk-related information channels. To keep in touch with news regarding the conference and Tcl events in general, subscribe to the tcl-announce list. As a followup (1) Anybody having seen ticket views showing 'no such variable' messages can simply reload the page to fix the issue. I had not rebuild the databases before sending my mail, causing the index schema to be out of sync with the ticketing setup. This is now corrected. (2) To add attachments to a new ticket, create and submit the ticket, then attach from the ticket view page. Note! Limitation. Users which are not logged in, or logged in as anonymous do not have the permissions to create attachments (At least not by default). I am not convinced yet to change the defaults, as they prevent spammers from taking advantage. On the other hand, an anon login goes through a captcha, as are users which are not logged in at all (*). So maybe allowing it is not too dangerous. On this topic I would like to hear more opinions. (*) The latter actually go through two captchas. (Preview, and Submit have a captcha each for them). Welcome to the C Runtime In Tcl, CriTcl for short, a system to build C extension packages for Tcl on the fly, from C code embedded within Tcl scripts, for all who wish to make their code go faster. It can be found at https://github.com/andreas-kupries/critcl and http://andreas-kupries.github.com/critcl/ A few things have happened since the last announcement (3.1.6): CHANGES FOR VERSION 3.1.7 [1] Fixed issue #24. Extract and unconditionally display compiler warnings found in the build log. Prevents users from missing warnings which, while not causing the build to fail, may still indicate problems. [2] New feature. Output hook. All non-messaging user output is now routed through the command critcl::print, and users are allowed to override it when using the critcl appliâ cation-as-package. [3] New feature, by Ashok P. Nadkarni. Platform configurations can inherit values from configurations defined before them. CHANGES FOR VERSION 3.1.8 [1] Fixed issue with package indices generated for Tcl 8.4. Join the list of commands with semi-colon, not newline. [2] Fixed issue #26 which brought up use-cases I had forgotten to consider while fixing bug #21 (see critcl 3.1.6). -- So long, Andreas Kupries <aku...@sh...> <http://www.purl.org/NET/akupries/> Developer @ <http://www.activestate.com/> Tcl'2013, Sep 23-27, New Orleans, LA, USA. http://www.tcl.tk/community/tcl2013/ EuroTcl'2013, Jul 6-7, Munich, GER GSoC 2013, add your ideas to http://wiki.tcl.tk/36464 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

Welcome to the C Runtime In Tcl, CriTcl for short, a system to build C extension packages for Tcl on the fly, from C code embedded within Tcl scripts, for all who wish to make their code go faster. It can be found at https://github.com/andreas-kupries/critcl and http://andreas-kupries.github.com/critcl/ A few things have happened since the last announcement (3.1.4): Changes for version 3.1.5 1. Fixed issue #19. Made the regular expression extracting the MSVC version number more general to make it work on german language systems. This may have to be revisited in the future, for other Windows locales. 2. Fixed issue #20. Made option -tea work on windows, at least in a unix emulation environment like msys/mingw. Changes for version 3.1.6 1. Fixed issue #21. While the multi-definition of the stub-table pointer variables was ok with for all the C linkers seen so far C++ linkers did not like this at all. Reworked the code to ensure that this set of variables is generated only once, in the wrapper around all the pieces to assemble. 2. Fixed issue #22, the handling of the command identifier arguments of critcl::ccommand, critcl::cproc, and critcl::cdata. We now properly allow any Tcl identifier and generate proper internal C identifiers from them. As part of this the signature of command critcl::name2c changed. The command now delivers a list of four values instead of three. The new value was added at the end. Further adapted the implementation of package critcl::class, a user of critcl::name2c. This package is now at version 1.0.6 and requires critcl 3.1.6 3. Fixed issue #23. Added a critcl-platform package (equivalent to platform 1.0.11) to be used in environments where platform is not available (Tcl 8.4.19 or earlier, except ActiveTcl 8.4.19, which has it). -- Andreas Kupries Senior Tcl Developer Code to Cloud: Smarter, Safer, Faster™ P: 778.786.1122 F: 778.786.1133 and...@ac... http://www.activestate.com Learn about Stackato for Private PaaS: http://www.activestate.com/stackato Tcl'2013, Sep 23-27, New Orleans, LA, USA. As suspected from a mail to a new mentor announcement list about 2 weeks ago, Google has started its Summer Of Code 2013 now. Please spread the word ... Oh, and our idea page is http://wiki.tcl.tk/36464 for you to add your ideas too. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Carol Smith <ca...@go...> Date: Mon, Feb 11, 2013 at 11:02 AM Subject: [GSoC Mentors Announce] Google Summer of Code 2013 To: gso...@go... Hi GSoC mentors and org admins, We've announced that we're doing Google Summer of Code 2013 [1]. Yay! If you would like to help spread the word about GSoC, we have presentations [2], logos [3], and flyers [4] for you to use. Please host meetups, tell your friends and colleagues about the program, go to conferences, talk to people about the program, and just generally do all the awesome word-of-mouth stuff you do every year to promote the program. The GSoC calendar, FAQ, and events timeline have all been updated with this year's important dates, so please refer to those for the milestones for this year's program. NB: the normal timeline for the program has been modified for this year. You'll probably want to examine the dates closely to make sure you know when important things are happening. Please consider translating the presentations and/or flyers into your native language and submitting them directly to me to post on the wiki. Localization for our material is integral to reaching the widest possible audience around the world. If you decide to translate a flyer, please fill out our form to request a thank you gift for your effort. [5] If you decide to host a meetup, please email me to let me know the date, time, and location so I can put it on the GSoC calendar. Also, remember to take pictures at your meetup and write up a blog post for our blog using our provided template for formatting [6]. If you need promotional items for your attendees, please fill out our form [7] to request some; we're happy to send some along. We can provide up to about 25 pens, notebooks, or stickers and/or a few t-shirts. Please keep in mind, though, that shipping restrictions and timeline vary country-to-country; request items early to make sure they get there on time! If you have questions about hosting meetups, please see the section in our FAQ [8]. Please also consider applying to participate as an organization again this year or maybe joining as a mentor for your favorite organization if they are selected this year. We rely on you for your help for the success of this program, so thank you in advance for all the work you do! As I find time in the next days. I should note that I hope to actually put a copy of the HTML into the fossil repository of Tcllib itself, and make it directly available at https://core.tcl.tk/tcllib/home I.e. use fossil's ability for embedded documentation. If that works out the http://tcllib.sourceforge.net/doc/ may change to become a simple forward to the new location. And thanks for reminding me of this doc location. -- Andreas Kupries Senior Tcl Developer Code to Cloud: Smarter, Safer, Faster™ P: 778.786.1122 F: 778.786.1133 and...@ac... http://www.activestate.com Learn about Stackato for Private PaaS: http://www.activestate.com/stackato Tcl'2013, Sep 23-27, New Orleans, LA, USA. I have started to work on the Tcllib 1.15 release. Today I ran the full test-suite against current branch heads of Tcl 8.4, 8.5, and 8.6 (Linux all), fixing any issues found (not that many), and also went through and fixed a number of bug reports today, new and old(er). See the timeline at http://core.tcl.tk/tcllib/timeline Also thanks to Roy Keene for updating PKI to 0.6. If there are important bug reports we should fix before release please bump them up to priority 9 to make them properly visible, or, if they are already at that priority bump them via comment. I am aware of the IRC/EOF issue. To all developers, you are asked to check through the bugs assigned to yourself to see if there are any you can/should fix. Hi Johann, good to hear from you. I asked not to forget 1.9.1, but to put the tag "BWidget" as main branch, which was confirmed by Roy. Hi Roy, thank you very much for your effort. I introduced quite a lot of code changes at that time (Sept. 2009) for a better ttk support. The branch was called 1.9.1. Later on we (Harald and me) found out, that not all changes are backward compatible on all platforms and would probably cause existing programs to fail. The timeline shows that 2 branches were maintained in parallel for a while, whereas the intention of the 1.9.1 branch was somehow more "experimental". For the migration to fossil you can simply forget the 1.9.1 branch and use the source maintained by Harald, tagged as 1.9.6. Thanks all, Johann The branch which was committed into the cvs 1.9.1 On 10.12.2012, at 18:41, Roy Keene <rk...@rk...> wrote: > Andreas, > > Setting the main branch to "BWidget" isn't a problem. > > Harald, > > Looking at the timeline here: > http://rkeene.org/projects/tcl/TESTING/bwidget.fossil/timeline?n=2000 > > Can you provide any insight into why the commit on 10-AUG-2009 is based on > the state of the repository 09-SEP-2009 ? > > Is that a legitimate branch that happened in August and didn't make its > way into trunk into September and the branchpoint is just wrong ? > > Thanks, > Roy Keene > > On Mon, 10 Dec 2012, Andreas Kupries wrote: > >> On Sun, Dec 9, 2012 at 11:48 PM, Harald Oehlmann >> <har...@el...> wrote: >>> Andreas, >>> >>> thank you for the work ! >> >> You are welcome. >> >>> >>> Am 07.12.2012 19:04, schrieb Andreas Kupries: >>>> The only exception is the BWidget CVS which contains a timewarp Roy >>>> Keene (our conversion guy) has to straighten out first before we can >>>> put the resulting Fossil up on core also.
