I have created a release candidate for the upcoming Tcllib 1.14 release and put it up on Sourceforge, appropriately labeled. See https://sourceforge.net/projects/tcllib/upload/tcllib/1.14_RC0/ When the actual release is made in December any RC's will be removed. Anybody with time please give it a whirl (install, run tests, read docs, etc.) Anybody with fixes for still open bugs, please add them to the bug, or, if you are a maintainer for Tcllib, fix it directly, and commit (after proper testing). -- Andreas Kupries Senior Tcl Developer ActiveState, The Dynamic Language Experts P: 778.786.1122 F: 778.786.1133 and...@ac... http://www.activestate.com Get insights on Open Source and Dynamic Languages at www.activestate.com/blog |

From the log files of a test run done at home using the 8.4/8.5/8.6 branch heads from the fossil repository, with no additional packages (no tcllibc, no Trf, no TLS, no wish (but Tk), (*)) I have the following summary of problems: cat Y.failures [8.4.19] doctools ~~ FAILS T 331 P 328 S 0 F 3 [8.4.19] math ~~ ERR T 1415 P 1415 S 0 F 0 [8.4.19] pop3d ~~ FAILS T 152 P 39 S 0 F 113 [8.5.10] doctools ~~ FAILS T 331 P 328 S 0 F 3 [8.5.10] math ~~ ERR T 2174 P 2174 S 0 F 0 [8.5.10] pt ~~ FAILS T 1523 P 1501 S 0 F 22 [8.6b2] doctools ~~ FAILS T 331 P 328 S 0 F 3 [8.6b2] interp ~~ FAILS T 41 P 37 S 0 F 4 [8.6b2] math ~~ ERR T 2174 P 2174 S 0 F 0 [8.6b2] multiplexer ~~ FAILS T 9 P 8 S 0 F 1 [8.6b2] pki ~~ FAILS T 32 P 31 S 0 F 1 [8.6b2] pop3 ~~ FAILS T 45 P 43 S 1 F 1 [8.6b2] pop3d ~~ FAILS T 152 P 113 S 0 F 39 [8.6b2] pt ~~ FAILS T 1523 P 1501 S 0 F 22 The ERR parts are aborts of test files. That can be improper handling when called for an unsupported Tcl version, up to an actual crash of the tclsh. I'll have to read the detailed logs to know. The FAILS simply mean that some tests failed (see last column for the count). For 'pki' I got updated code from Roy. I'll redo its tests after putting this into CVS. After that my own focus will be on math doctools pop3(d) pt in this order. Anybody taking these on should tell me and/or work in a different order. Stu (I believe) reported on the chat, that the SSL certificates I use for some parts of comm and pop3 are expired. This should not be an issue here as the Tcl shells did not have the TLS package available and thus are not (well, should not) run the the associated tests. I will add the accelerators and other binary helper packages (tcllibc, Trf, TLS) after the first round of fixes, work things slowly up to the full testsuite, with wish and whatnot. (*) That means that this has not run the full testsuite of all packages, only the truly pure-Tcl parts. -- Andreas Kupries Senior Tcl Developer ActiveState, The Dynamic Language Experts P: 778.786.1122 F: 778.786.1133 and...@ac... http://www.activestate.com Get insights on Open Source and Dynamic Languages at www.activestate.com/blog |

Well, not yet. The plan for the moment is to make a release by Dec 12 (Monday). That is now 5 weeks away. To all tcllib developers, please have a look at your bug reports, close outdated stuff, see what can be fixed in time for the release. Anybody, please take the current state of the CVS and run the tcllib testsuite, either in full, or for you packages, on the platforms you have access too, against Tcl 8.4, 8.5, and the head of 8.6 beta. If possible, please try to determine whether any failure seen is a fault of the testsuite, or of the package itself. Or neither (*). Note: While we have a number of packages claiming to work for Tcl 8.2 or 8.3 I will not be testing against these versions of the core. With even 8.4 getting EOLd I will simply not bother with versions of the core that old. If someone does choose to test against 8.3 or older, and problems occur which are 8.4-isms my recommendation is to bump the version number of the affected package, make the new version require Tcl 8.4, and thus be done with it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (*) We had several instances in the past where the Tcllib testsuite triggered bugs in the Tcl core itself. -- Andreas Kupries Senior Tcl Developer ActiveState, The Dynamic Language Experts P: 778.786.1122 F: 778.786.1133 and...@ac... http://www.activestate.com Get insights on Open Source and Dynamic Languages at www.activestate.com/blog |

Past conferences have seen submissions covering a wide variety of topics including: * Scientific and engineering applications * Industrial controls * Distributed applications and Network Managment * Object oriented extensions to Tcl/Tk * New widgets for Tk * Simulation and application steering with Tcl/Tk * Tcl/Tk-centric operating environments * Tcl/Tk on small and embedded devices * Medical applications and visualization * Use of different programming paradigms in Tcl/Tk and proposals for new directions. * New areas of exploration for the Tcl/Tk language This year is the fourth year that the Tcl community is participating in the Google Summer of Code. The conference program committee would like to encourage submissions that report on the Tcl projects selected for Google SoC 2011. Submissions should consist of an abstract of about 100 words and a summary of not more than two pages, and should be sent as plain text to <tclconference AT googlegroups DOT com> no later than August 26, 2011. Authors of accepted abstracts will have until October 9, 2011 to submit their final paper for the inclusion in the conference proceedings. The proceedings will be made available on digital media, so extra materials such as presentation slides, code examples, code for extensions etc. are encouraged. Printed proceedings will be produced as an on-demand book at lulu.com The authors will have 25 minutes to present their paper at the conference. The program committee will review and evaluate papers according to the following criteria: * Quantity and quality of novel content * Relevance and interest to the Tcl/Tk community * Suitability of content for presentation at the conference Proposals may report on commercial or non-commercial systems, but those with only blatant marketing content will not be accepted. Application and experience papers need to strike a balance between background on the application domain and the relevance of Tcl/Tk to the application. Application and experience papers should clearly explain how the application or experience illustrates a novel use of Tcl/Tk, and what lessons the Tcl/Tk community can derive from the application or experience to apply to their own development efforts. Papers accompanied by non-disclosure agreements will be returned to the author(s) unread. All submissions are held in the highest confidentiality prior to publication in the Proceedings, both as a matter of policy and in accord with the U. S. Copyright Act of 1976. The primary author for each accepted paper will receive registration to the Technical Sessions portion of the conference at a reduced rate. TCLCA receives first publication rights, and expects that this is the first time the paper is published. Not a retread from another conference, etc. TCLCA further receives subsequent publication rights, to handle the Publish-On-Demand nature of Lulu, our vendor for the dissemination of the conference proceedings. All other rights are retained by the author. You can put this on your website, include it in a book, expand it into a novel, sell the movie rights, etc. Other Forms of Participation The program committee also welcomes proposals for panel discussions of up to 90 minutes. Proposals should include a list of confirmed panelists, a title and format, and a panel description with position statements from each panelist. Panels should have no more than four speakers, including the panel moderator, and should allow time for substantial interaction with attendees. Panels are not presentations of related research papers. Slots for Works-in-Progress (WIP) presentations and Birds-of-a-Feather sessions (BOFs) are available on a first-come, first-served basis starting in August 1, 2011. Specific instructions for reserving WIP and BOF time slots will be provided in the registration information available in June 2011. Some WIP and BOF time slots will be held open for on-site reservation. All attendees with an interesting work in progress should consider reserving a WIP slot. Registration Information More information on the conference is available the conference Web site (http://www.tcl.tk/community/tcl2011/) and will be published on various Tcl/Tk-related information channels. Reservations for hotel suites can be made by calling (703) 686-1100. Be certain to mention that you are with the Tcl/Tk Conference to get the Tcl/Tk Conference room rate. Hi Andreas, there are two TCLLIB developper mailing lists: https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/tcllib-devel https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/tcllib-bugs The second was helpful, because any cvs change has sent an E-Mail. This is not the case any more. Any new bugs are sent by both lists. Two alternative suggestions: A) Remove tcllib-bugs B) Make SF Bug reports only appear on tcllib-bugs and not on tcllib-devel -Harald |

Attached a few zip archives containing modules/packages which could be added to tcllib. virtchannel_base.zip Module 'virtchannel_base', additional packages/channels Tcl 8.5+ facade - An implementation of Wub's IChan, using logger for debugging and written as base-class instead of mixin. A channel wrapping around another channel logging activity and providing life-time information. std - Provides a singleton channel putting stdin and stdout into a single read/writable channel. cat - Concatenation of multiple channels (similar to facade, but multiple inputs, not seekable). Reading from the channel returns the data from all the subordinate channels in turn. Useful for streaming complex data build up out of many smaller pieces, in memory, on file, etc. (Example of a possible use: mime module not having to construct a mail with large attachments in memory. Only the various pieces, with the attachment just one channel in the whole concatenation.) http.zip Module 'http', new package 'http::intercept'. Tcl 8.5+ ( {*} ) To intercept http::geturl commands and serve them out of a database of url/response mappings. Useful for testing http-based protocols. Incomplete. try.zip New module and package 'try'. Tcl 8.5+ ( {*}, lassign ) When Donal implemented try/finally in 8.6 he wrote a Tcl implementation first, before going to C. This here contains said Tcl implementation, nicely wrapped as package. I.e. forward compatibility. lambda.zip New module and package 'lambda'. Tcl 8.5+ ( {*}, apply ) Simple wrappers around ::apply to make it easier (more proc-like) to write anon procedures. These are so simple, they could be added to the core. Still, let us put them in Tcllib first, for hopefully quicker distribution, and to see if they are actually used. dictutil - Still working through Dict.tcl. Issue is less copying the code over, but writing docs. -- So long, Andreas Kupries <aku...@sh...> <http://www.purl.org/NET/akupries/> Developer @ <http://www.activestate.com/> ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

I do have a minor niggle with extending a built-in ensemble though. IMO this should be a last resort if functionality can't be achieved in a separate (ensemble) command. This kind of "monkey patching" can lead to confusing and potentially brittle code as multiple extensions try to alter the same ensemble. I feel these maintainability considerations outweigh the neat syntax. Neil |

Yes. My implementation is pretty much the same as well, just an additional local variable to avoid doing the lrange twice, and explicit returns. # get value for key, with custom default if key not present. proc ::dictutil::get' {dict args} { set keys [lrange $args 0 end-1] if {[dict exists $dict {*}$keys]} { return [dict get $dict {*}$keys] } else { return [lindex $args end] } } The WUB Dict.tcl has a simimlar 'get?' method, except that it doesn't have a custom default, and always returns the empty string. Just an FYI about new things I added a few weeks ago: modules/valtype A few validation types for various numbers, i.e. special snit classes which take a value and throw an error if it isn't valid. The classes in valtype are a bit extended, they not only have the typemethod 'valid', but also a typemethod 'checkdigit' which can calculate the checkdigit for an incomplete value. We have validation for ean13, isbn, imei, usnpi amex, visa, discover, mastercard luhn, luhn5, verhoeff The last 3 are general checksum algorithms. All the creditcards are based on luhn, for example. -- Andreas Kupries Senior Tcl Developer ActiveState, The Dynamic Language Experts P: 778.786.1122 F: 778.786.1133 and...@ac... http://www.activestate.com Get insights on Open Source and Dynamic Languages at www.activestate.com/blog |
