Well, on my SPARC Solaris 8, using the latest Tcl/Tk 8.5 CVS,
I too see the same problem - that the image from string is corrupted
while the image from file is not.

At least this is not a Mac specific issue.

Also, note that I see the problem with Tcl/Tk 8.3 and 8.4.
