Generally I don't like modes and variants and configurations and I'm happier when we move toward having fewer of them and not more of them. My long-held preference for addressing the problem is a total do-over on TIP 280. However, history proves neither I nor anyone else is going to produce a new, improved TIP 280 solution any time soon, and this TIP identifies a real problem and a workable solution that leaves open the possibility of a better answer later. That's good enough for me for now. It will be interesting to see if anyone at all cares about the incompatibility. If not, that may support the more radical answer that TIP 280 ought not be reworked, but simply removed (or downgraded in status to appear only in specialized builds, like [memory]) on the basis no one is making use of it.
