It would appear that the discussion on TIP #158 has shed all the
light that it's likely to shed. I recognize that the proposal is
bound to be controversial - primarily because applications that
distinguish two keys that have identical labels are probably doing
The Wrong Thing. Nevertheless, the functionality has been requested
repeatedly.
As a point for future consideration, outside the scope of the TIP,
I would be inclined to make Mac and Unix/X work the same way - an
application should have to try hard to distinguish two keys that work
alike. I believe, though, that we can't do that in a minor release
because it will break existing apps that bind to the numeric pad.
The TIP may not be the best possible implementation, but everything
I've examined seems worse in terms of breaking existing apps. I think
it's time to quote Pilate: "What I have written, I have written," and
call the vote.
