Extensions can spawn external processes, so you could probably keep a good part of your code intact if you wish, (and you could need that, in case XUL+js doesn't offer the functions needed to do what you do).

Since Thunderbird can be naturally extended by means of extensions ( https://update.mozilla.org/extensions/?application=thunderbird ), perhaps converting this proggie to one of them could be worth.
