Hi,

I have just upgraded from 1.3.20 to 1.3.21. When trying to create a new task or updating an existing one, the task editor window do not open. Update can only be done directly in the task view.

Very uncomfortable, especially for me who forgot to take a backup before upgrading... :)

Happy New Year!

Olivier

Hi Olivier, this is most likely an issue with changes in the setup and your .ini file.
I suggest you remove or rename you file and then the program will go back to default state. You'll have to reset your preferences and window layouts and such, but you won't lose any task data. Hopefully, everything will then work.

    see https://answers.launchpad.net/taskcoach/+faq/1061

Now, I actually had the same problem once in the past, and I was able to EDIT my .ini file to fix the problem without losing my settings. If you like, you can try that. In my case, the info around the task editor settings for size and location of the editor window was missing, so I typed in a number similar to what is in the default .ini file and that worked. If you are into fiddling with these things, you can try that.

Let us know if you get this fixed.

    Thanks for your patience!

    Cheers,
    Aaron

Thank you for the quick feedback.

I have deleted the .ini file. The same issue has happened after restarting taskcoach. I have also uninstalled taskcoach entirely including the application data related info. After re-installation (using the .exe installer) the same issue come up. I have attached the .ini.

Works for me with that ini file... Could you check if there is an error log (see https://answers.launchpad.net/taskcoach/+faq/1824) please ?

By the way, backup is not an issue here. You can always download old versions of the program: https://sourceforge.net/projects/taskcoach/files/taskcoach/

Backing up your .tsk file, on the other hand, is something important that you should be doing (I have mine in my DropBox folder). But this has nothing to do with your issue here or your updating to the new version.

Sorry for the confusion Aaron. I try to clarify:

when downgrading to 1.3.20, then I am not able to open my current .tsk file that I have already opened and saved with 1.3.21 or .22. I get the following error message:

Cannot open C:\Users...\projects.tsk because it was created by a newer version of Task Coach. Please upgrade Task Coach.

      Any workaround you would suggest?

    I'm seeing the same issue.

I'm running the Portable Apps version of 1.3.21 if that's significant.

I tried deleting the ini file, which worked temporarily. But it returned again, I believe after I saved my XML file again.

I've attached the error I'm seeing in my log file. The root error appears to be :

    wx._core.PyAssertionError: C++ assertion "id == wxID_ANY || (id >= 0 && id < 32767)" failed at ....\src\common\wincmn.cpp(249) in wxWindowBase::CreateBase(): invalid id value

I notice that 32767 is ((2^15) - 1). Could be that I've hit some kind of limit?

Argh I didn't think this could actually happen... I'll fix that ASAP.

The issue is still there. Here is the log.

Oh no, it isn't fixed? Sorry!

I hope we can look at the error and fix it ASAP.

As to the backup and the old version, I didn't realize that would be a problem. So yes, backing up your .tsk file is important. Having the Task Coach version itself backed up is not necessary, but things could potentially happen to your .tsk file, and having that backed up is a good idea.

We will get this fixed, so we will get things working for you, but in the worst case, there is surely a way to edit the .tsk file in a text editor and get it working again with older versions. But please make sure to backup. And sorry for the trouble!

I edited the .tsk file and updated the version to lower than .20. I was then able to open it with .20.

I stay tuned to test the fix as soon as it is available. :)

It's another problem, according to the log. It seems one of your planned start dates has an invalid month number. Could you take a quick look at your planned start dates (showing the column in the task view) and see if something's wrong ?

  • Jérome Laheurte

The "created by a newer version of Task Coach" message is because you saved your file with 1.3.21 or 1.3.22; you can hack this by opening the .tsk file in a text editor and decrementing the "tskversion" value at the start. Make a backup first!

Obviously I need to read all the thread before answering :)

I have the same issue described here. The edit window is not opening... I had to get back to .20 version.

@luferogo, can you attach your .log file so we can make sure it's the same cause ?

@Jerome, Of course! Here you are.

    I got the same issue.
No problem with 1.3.20, but not able to open edit window of tasks and efforts with version 1.3.21 and 22.
The error in the log (see attached): ValueError: month must be in 1..12

  • Jérome Laheurte

Looks like there are two different but related problems here. I don't understand exactly what's going on though. Could you attach an anonymized version of your tsk file (Help menu => Anonymize) ?

The problem is not specific to the .tsk file I am using. I can be reproduced with any new .tsk file. Here is one. I have been using .22 to create it. I have been able to create a few tasks and subtasks but there is no editor window coming up to edit them.

Since it works for me it's probably a setting I don't have. Could you attach your TaskCoach.ini file as well ?
