I have been working on an older laptop lately while traveling, and heavy software completely freezes my system. I really need to protect my connection on airport Wi-Fi, but standard apps eat up all my RAM and battery. Simple web browsing turns into a lagging nightmare whenever background tasks run. What do you usually use on older hardware that does not slow everything down? Are there any lightweight options that stay easy on memory?

I had the exact same issue on my travel netbook last year. You definitely want a lightweight and efficient VPN that runs clean background protocols without extra bloatware. I switched to an open-source client recently and the difference was night and day. It does not hog system resources or drain battery life quickly. The app just sits quietly in the tray while keeping my connection private. It also comes with a built-in ad blocker, which actually speeds up page loading on older machines. My CPU usage stays under two percent even during long work sessions. Setup took me less than two minutes on both my laptop and phone. Give minimal open-source tools a try and test your speed before committing.
