I’ve noticed that one Aventics pneumatic cylinder on our equipment requires maintenance more often than expected. At the same time, another identical cylinder on a different machine lasts significantly longer. The operating conditions differ slightly, although both machines are used every day. So I decided to investigate what factors might affect the cylinder’s service life. What do you usually pay attention to when operating such components?

In my experience, the quality of the air in a pneumatic system is very important. If the air contains a lot of moisture or contaminants, the parts inside the cylinder can wear out more quickly. For one piece of equipment, I ordered Aventics products at Hydro-Funk when the old cylinder needed to be replaced. After installing the new part, we also checked the air filtration and the condition of the connections. It’s also important to use the correct operating pressure and avoid excessive mechanical stress. If the cylinder is installed at an angle, this can also lead to additional wear. I would periodically check the condition of the piston rod, mountings, and seals. Such inspections help identify a problem before the cylinder completely fails.

We recently increased the number of operating cycles for the equipment at our facility. After a while, several pneumatic components began to require more frequent maintenance. Previously, the equipment had been operating at a slower pace, so the difference wasn’t immediately noticeable. Now we take the number of operating cycles into account when planning maintenance.
