Being a caregiver is honestly exhausting sometimes and I feel like I am running out of steam. Does anyone know of any programs that offer help for the whole family and not just the individual? I need some guidance on how to manage the long-term planning and also maybe some respite care. Is there any state funding for this kind of thing? I just need to know that we are not doing this all on our own.

It is really tough when you feel like you are carrying the whole world on your shoulders. I have been there and it is okay to admit you need a break. You should look into family support services by OPWDD because they are designed for exactly this situation. We started using them through Gateway and it honestly saved our sanity. They offer respite care and help with the actual planning for the future which can be so scary to think about alone. The staff is very understanding and they don't judge you at all for needing help. It is not just about the person with the disability - the whole family matters too. Getting that extra support makes you a better caregiver in the long run and helps prevent burnout. Definitely reach out to them soon because you deserve to have some peace of mind. It made a huge difference for us and I think it will help you too.
