#174 Bad characters encoding on non-UTF8 systems
Hi,
when I sync my WM6 HTC TyTN with KDE PIM on my Gentoo I get my contact's names messed in Kontact (I can see 2 rectangles for every non-ASCII character).
I think the problem is that I don't use utf8 as my system's locale (I use iso8859-2). As I don't want to change my system's locale the synchronization is useless for me now.
My suggestion is to make sync-engine do an encoding conversion on the produced .xml file in ~/.synce/.../... based either on a new option stored in ~/.synce/....conf.xml or based on autodetection of system locale.
I was not sure wheather to put it here or in the feature requests section but since it makes synchronization unusable on non-UTF8 systems It ended up here.

Zdenek, I would think, though I'm not certain, that opensync, and particulary the kde-pim plugin, should detect utf-8 input and convert it to whatever is appropriate for your system, since the output from sync-engine explicitly states it is sending a utf-8 document.
Is it possible for you to try a sync to evolution ?
Sorry I have no evolution and no Gnome on my PC... and it's a bit old PC with Gentoo on it it would take ages to compile and install...
You are right about the XML, it states it is in utf8, but still Kontact gets it just like it is and displays it incorrectly. Maybe the synce opensync plugin could do the conversion?
I would want to establish first which plugin should be doing it, if opensync expects utf-8 then there is a bug in the kdepim plugin. I'll see if I can redge up some info.
