I think both are necessary.  There should be a way to make the font
selector only show, for example, fixed width sans-serif fonts, and
then you can you look them over to narrow down your choice.  I know
very little about fonts, is there some kind of meta-data embedded in
font files which you can read to find out what kind of font it is?
