I actually get this problem with 1.1-rc5 and 1.1-rc6.
See the attached 2 extracts from my syslog for both versions.
If I disable compression, it works.
My system is a Clevo 888E (Branded as MESH 8880), 512MB RAM, Pentium 4 2.66GHz, 60GB HDD, 1.5GB swap partition on /dev/hda4.
I have it suspending nicely with X running on the Radeon 9000, even with DRI apps running (courtesy of the patch from cpbotha.net/dri_resume.html).
Thanks for the patch.

I have tried 1.1-rc8B and compression is working again - thanks.
Also, a bug I did not report with 1.1-rc6: fails to freeze stopped processes.
This is also fixed in 1.1-rc8B. Cool, thanks again.
