Probably could do away with that.  So -i would be -S fs, otherwise if
reading from stdin then it's -S prog.  The difference was that with -S
prog then it might be handy to specify the program -- in case there
are any situation where you can't use a pipe.  Not sure there is such
a situation.

I can't remember if there was a reason for that.  Maybe to work on
VMS??
