Can't access plan view when 3D view is open in a separate window.
MacOS 10.12.6

    Not sure to understand the problem. Can't you resize and move windows so you can view the main window and the 3D view window?

      Yes, I could move/resize both to view, but then what’s the point? It’d be nice (& expected given the menu selection) to be able to flip between large 3D & plan windows. As-is, it just lets me play with the 3D view in “full screen”, but then I have to close the window if I want to do anything else.

    Sorry, I still don't understand your problem. Even if the 3D view window is always in front, you can still reorganize windows to prevent the 3D view from hiding the main window, right?
    By the way, the 3D view window is a child window of the main window, the reason why it's always on top. The good thing of this way of doing is:
    1. You can't lose the 3D view, because it would be hidden by the main window.
    2. Only one group of window appears when you click on Sweet Home 3D in the task bar.
