Looks like a duplicate of https://sourceforge.net/p/sweethome3d/bugs/1015/ (just that you report the same issue on Windows).
But then, why would Jamison have mentioned "multiple instances"?
Last edit: Emmanuel Puybaret 2021-03-24
this happens when i have two or more designs open. i did notice another thing yesterday. it seems to occur only when the 3d view is in a separate window. if i "connect" the 3d view and then try to close or save, it does not freeze.
i have not updated on mac yet, so i do not have anything to add to the other thread mentioned above.
@Emmanuel: sorry, I thought that despite the multiple instance issue the root cause could be the same.
No problem
Jamison, how do you know that multiple instances of the application are used? By default, Sweet Home 3D tries to use one instance for all the opened windows, mainly to ease copy-paste operations between documents.
Maybe it's just an issue about the maximum RAM used by the program, in which case you should try to run it in 64 bit if possible (run the installer again and choose the 64 bit architecture when prompted) and adjust this maximum by reading the FAQ How can I adjust the memory used by Sweet Home 3D? (but if you use the 32 bit version of Sweet Home 3D at the moment, the simple fact of running it in 64 bit should make it already work better, check displayed values in About dialog box).
I am likely mistaken in the instance description. I simply have more than one design open at the same time. Interestingly enough, I went to try and replicate it today and am not able to. If it happens a gain I will update this thread.
Just as an FYI, I am running version 6.5 and the JDK version in the "About" page is 64-bit
You should take a look to the used memory in About dialog box.
If it reaches 100%, try to increase the maximum memory used by Sweet Home 3D reading the FAQ How can I adjust the memory used by Sweet Home 3D?
By default, the program sets this maximum at launch time to 50% of the available memory under Windows 64 bit, but you can increase it if you want.
I have this same issue on Mac OS Big Sur (App Store version). When I open multiple Sweethome 3d Files at once, if I close either one of them, then Sweethome 3d locks up and I must force quit it. If I only had one file open, however, I can close it, open a new file, close it, open a new file, etc. As soon as more than one file is open, if any of them are closed, Sweethome 3d locks up. It is very consistent.
There is no memory issue, and I also tried increasing the memory Sweethome 3d is allowed to use.
Travis, I don't think your issue is the same bug as Jamison reported. Try the version 6.5.5 released in the Mac App Store two days ago which should fix your problem.
As Jamison couldn't reproduce his issue, I close this bug ticket.
