Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development. With many thanks for your participation, Benno Luthiger PS: The results of the survey will be published under http://www.isu.unizh.ch/fuehrung/blprojects/FASD/. We have set up the mailing list fa...@we... for this study. Please see http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/mailinglist_en.html for registration to this mailing list. _______________________________________________________________________ Benno Luthiger Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich 8092 Zurich Mail: benno.luthiger(at)id.ethz.ch _______________________________________________________________________ |

I can do some testing. I have a machine available and lab environment at the office. I can probably get some very limited support from my company, including lab hardware, maybe a few wireless cards to play with. I'll try to grab a copy of the ISO this week if I can find time at work and start to play. Dear SWAP: Alrighty, we have version 0.1 already out on ISO, I'm gunna see if OxD will write up a list of what we have and have not as far as the distribution is concerned. I've got a few tasks i conjured up that are pretty good requirements for the next version, anything you want to add is fine. Once we get the tasks layed out, we'll post to the forums (as well as use the task function) to voluenteer for a task. The unvolenteered tasks will be assigned randomly begenning with those who aren't on another task, then divvy the rest up between everyone. This way we can get some work done on the project and have something to go by. Also, if you're researching a task and find anything useful pertaining to any other task you can always post that information in the task manager. The subproject and tasks are all listed under the task manager as version 0.1.1 requirements. Any documentation that you come across you can post a url to the task if you don't have time to check it out or organize it, or if you do you can go ahead and format a document for the documents section. We should also probably create a document that the end user can begin with that will link to the other documentation and organize it in an intelligble and wireless-oriented mannor. I'll create a task for that, if any of you are good at documentation. For now we can just stock up on general purpose documentation and either organize or re-write it at a later time. Web site: I think someone should recruit or offer to design a website for the project. I'm not really that good at it, I'd end up with some php based package to do it for me, but if you know of anyone it seems our webmaster has dropped off the face of the planet, so we'll need to go ahead and continue that with another developer. For those of you interested, The contact at vandyke (mike i think his name was) has written back a few times to request some more information and basicly to say "let me know when you have it working", so we're still good on a distribution channel once we get to version 1.0, and also some mandrake developers have been writing me concerning the project with a few suggestions and some emails to contact some of the business folk who might be able to help us with a distribution channel. They might also be interested in a rebranding, so we might be able to see it on shelves at least at wallmarts if we get a working copy going by the end of 2004. We're currently registered as a VAR, and we can (with approval) use the Mandrake name with our distribution plus any logos and etc. that's located on their reseller site. I'm going to rebrand a few as MandrakeSWAP or something and distribute the iso's at cheapbytes or something and see what kind of response it gets. Membership: Well, we've still got our core membership, if there is anyone you know you wish to bring into the project or anyone that has emailed you, let me know (or most of you have admin to add them yourselves). The sf.net system doesn't allow people to sign up for projects, the projects must add the user and the user must have a userid with sf.net. Also remember any commits to cvs require you to post your private (not public) key into your sf.net profile (not viewable by sf.net or anyone else) so you can authenticate (they have a very weird authentication system, but it's passwordless so it doesn't b0rk most cvs clients). I think file releases are controlled by ftp, so you don't have to worry about a key but if you plan on issuing fixes, please try and post patches. Which brings me to the issue of a maintainer. If anyone wants to sign up as a maintainer for the distribution (OxD so far has been the only person to make a release), please email me or post a note in the forums, and we'll vote on it or whatever. A good qualification for maintainer is a broadband connection, a grip of extra space, and a cd burner. That would facilitate the distribution process. Anyone with fixes or improvements can run their patches/iso's through the maintainer so we can assure that a release is made only when we have met our design criteria for that version. I don't want to push anything past a version that isn't ready, plus another set of eyes wont hurt. Also, I've opened a forum for a FBSD port of SWAP that would allow the end user another option for their kernel/OS. I'm also looking into storing multiple kernels on the ISO's and/or multiple images. Put fbsd on one side and linux on the other and allow the user to choose on bootup, though it would be hard to keep the projects in sync. I do, however, know some people that swear by bsd, so it would help to facilitate those users. Donations: Well I was piddling around the donations thing and I tried to register our project but we need a paypal email and every admin has to OK the deal. I don't see us getting many donations, but of course who knows, maybe they can't donate because we haven't set it up :). Anyways, I'd like to know of anyone that is an accountant or knows someone that is good at handling something like donations that would want to voluenteer to manage that. I don't trust myself to manage donations simply because I'm not going to busy myself with it, but it would be nice to get some paid dev help come in every once in a while to pull us out of a fix. EndNote: SWAP. What is it? Why are you getting these emails? Heh, I don't know, but luckily we've past the time when a project goes stale and there's a few of us still kicking. We've got a release and we're on our way to the 0.1.1 release of the project. Hopefully it will be semi-useable by the next release and we can start to install this bugger on some machines and test it. I've got three test sites (two small ones and one very large one) that I can test a deployment, and there's also a few access point appliances that you can install linux on now, so maybe we might make something of SWAP. Also, the two possible distributor channels are promising and I'm currently working on something on ymir's box that we could possibly use for a commercial model that will be able to earn a little some-some off this project. I gotta check with sf.net but I wouldn't mind buying some licenses to sf.net for commercial use if we had the economic model to support it :^). But, anyways, send your patches, recruit some developers, and always keep your eye out for anything that would help SWAP out. Laters, NeXeN __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Xyzzy, could you toss the specs up into the docs section of the SF project, or forward them to Daniel or myself so that we can add them in? Perhaps we could just drop them into the hardware requirements section of the existing scope draft. As folks start cutting code, we should probably start a version/minor/release number on peices of this (the webmin module for example) and place them on the site as well. Something to keep in mind (and slightly beyond my current experience) might be compatibility on the wireless side with different, and emerging wireless protocols. Intel's Centrino comes to mind. I have a laptop that I'll soon be able to utilize as a test machine. I might be able to get my office to donate a machine (maybe that very laptop which is old and slow) and a couple of wireless NICs for the project. If so, I'd build a DMZ, and grant project members access to the machine for testing purposes. The interest of Van Dyke Technologies may be enough of a boost to convince my employer to do some minor sponsorship of the project in the form of outdated hardware. As a reminder, the (in progress) scope draft may be found at: http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=14831&group_id=71338 |

Yes, it has been brought to my attention the new ipsec module (and the existing freeswan). We're currently working towards customizing webmin to look less like webmin and more like swap. Our drop in product is nearly complete, and I belive I have seen the device you're talking about. It runs the range of upwards past 200 bucks, and we could probably beat it. Also, vandyke had contacted me about the project and said vaguely they were interested. I had sent the information over to the head of business affairs and they've responded with interest, however, they want a working demo before they'll dedicate manhours to the project. We'll probably be able to get them to distribute the cd's for us so it'll make it easier (and cheaper) on us to get started in the commertial market. Also, once the initial iso is completed (got OxD working on that) we'll upload it to SF and see what kind of response we get. Also we can get some #linux or #linuxhelp folks to test it, as I'm sure they're all interested in a homebrew project from the channels. I'm going to update on some more information when it becomes available, and if you guys want to get to work on stuff, you're more than welcome. You can send me updates to nex...@ya..., contact me online, or send to the mailing list when you've done something that's tangible enough to distribute to the rest of the developers. If someone needs help with something, feel free to contact me, and I'll get some help on it (or you can contact $developer of your choice). Again, any one know a clued individual that wishes to help, forward them to my email address. On a seporate note, I've got a web chick to handle the website and some of the html work on the webmin module, and she's a cutie too <g>. None the less, we've got that part down as soon as she gets her a good dev machine. Anyone else want to help or start on the webpage is welcome, I'll get her info to ya so you can corrolate. Anyone willing to work with the webmin module, rbastic is sort of in charge (or at least voluenteered to take part in) of that area, and OxD is doing packaging. Xyzzy has some hardware specs for those of you who wish to get your hands (or browsers) on the intended design of the device. Thanks for the update, siglite, we'll proceed forth with the base that OxD is creating. Until then, keep working, looking at pr0n or whatever it is that tickles your pickle :^) Laters, Daniel Remsburg NeXeN Project Manager SWAP Project __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? IIRC, vandyke is the developer for SecureCRT, which is= a=20 well known and solid SSH client. I'd love to hear anything they've said=20 regarding interest. Someone mentioned in #linux the other day, that there is now a webmin mod= ule=20 for IPSEC. This might be very convenient, possibly leaving us only with = the=20 need to built, test, and integrate a webmin module for controlling wirele= ss=20 parameters, and roll it up into a distro. Who's familiar with the wireless drivers for PCMCIA and other wireless ne= twork=20 cards in the later kernels, eg: 2.6-testing or a late 2.5 kernel? As of = the=20 last 2.4.x kernel I built for my laptop, full support for some cards/chip= sets=20 required special patches to the pcmcia drivers, and replaced the stock ke= rnel=20 pcmcia goodies. =20 Interestingly enough, I saw a commercial product the other day that is ve= ry=20 similar to what we're doing here. SWAP update: Ok, the #linux users OxD and rbastic have been added as developers to the project. OxD has generously donated some space to house the knoppix iso so we can tweak it into the SWAP iso for distribution. Also, rbastic has perl skills and such so he'll be helping with the webmin modules. Their user names on SourceForge are malander (rbastic) and toaster13 (OxD). Any members are encouraged to exchange information/notes/ideas/etc with the new members. They have been briefed on what SWAP is, however, the fine details are still the same as the origional brainstorming we had done. The project has lost it's noosphere, and hopefully with these two members we can continue with our plans. Also, now that we have space to host development (OxD's box) we can proceede with our plans. Call to task: the following tasks are available still: webpage design logo design ideas webmin module iso packaging exploring into integration, e.g. .rpm's and .deb's for installation of SWAP into an existing server PR (already have one software vendor interested, www.vandyke.com i think is the addy) also any other people interested in being a developer, my email is nex...@ya..., have them create a sourceforge account and send me an email requesting membership to project Ok, I believe that's the end of the update, any comments are encouraged to be sent over the mailing list. I checked your project scope, and I've got a few addendums to make. First of all, I don't think we should go with sysklogd but with syslog-ng, much more configurable and generally better. :-) Second, we've been talking about it (me, NeXeN and WyldOne) and we agreed that we should use Webmin and write modules for it, instead of doing it via Apache+CGI. So, that means we don't really need Apache, since Webmin is independent of Apache. Another good thing is it's written in Perl, which is a bonus, since we decided we're going to use Perl anyway. Docs on how to write Webmin modules are somewhere on thier site, http://www.webmin.com/. Oh, it also does SSL. As far as the dhcpd goes, I'd say we go with the ISC one, which, iirc, supports dealing leases based on MACs (I think that's what you want, not sure though, I haven't really used DHCP). Logrotate does a damn fine job at rotating logs, so I say we stick with that. Last, but not least, IPSec. Yes, most of us probably did work only with FreeS/WAN, and found it reliable, but KAME is now in 2.5, and I think we should at least look into it. (Steeeeg! :-P) My $0.02.
