How does someone enter time instants in real-time with
the keypad enter key when they are using a laptop
(which generally does not have a keypad enter key)?

It would be nice if some non-keypad key (such as the
regular text enter key) were also able to insert
time instants. This would make using a laptop for
tapping to the beats easier.

In Windows, we found out that you can open the
on-screen keyboard to type the keypad enter key by
clicking with the mouse:

Start menu --> Programs --> Accessories -->
Accessibility --> On-Screen Keyboard

Attached is a figure showing what the on-screen
keyboard looks like and where in the program menu
it resides.

    The Return key tends to be used for widget-specific
    purposes (such as accepting the current dialog default),
    so isn't usually wise to use it for application-specific
    alternatives. We could probably use it with some
    modifier, or just come up with another key.

    How about "shift-enter" on the text keyboard, and regular
    "enter" on the numeric keypad?

    Another idea would be to use the dot key "." (which is on
    both the keypad and the textpad), with the mnemonic being
    that you are marking a point in time.

    In SVN you can now use the ";" key.
