Sonic Visualiser v1.8 worked fine and I have tried both the packaged debian file on the website, here is the MD5sum:
I have also compiled the program from source and ran ./configure && make, it compiled just fine and the program runs fine but has the same problem has described. Namely, it can't find the audio playback which I assume is either ALSA directly or PulseAudio.
