  Fascinating idea for a project. I wish you well on this, it could be very useful to a lot of people, especially if you can get a lot of devices supported.
  
  I'd recommend looking at the Rockband drum controller as an inexpensive USB drum input device to support, and the Guitar Hero WOrld Tour drum kit when it's released this fall.
