Todays resolutions leave some more freedom on graphics style, than 320x200, so they don't need to be pixeled in the classic sense, but I kind of like to have clear and sharp sprites, which btw. Yoshis Island had too. For the backgrounds and tiles however I agree, one can't get sketchy enough with them and having them look like from a childs book can really make them look special compared the standard rendered graphics we see most of the day today.
