******************************** * SUE Newsletter December 2009 * ******************************** SUE is short for Screenreader & Usability Extensions, an effort to make screen reading on Linux more usable. SUE is based on the former Linux Screen Reader (LSR), an excellent platform for all kinds of assistive applications. SUE itself is the first of those assistive applications, namely a screen reader for graphical user interfaces on the GNOME desktop. SUE is available either from SVN trunk or in version 1.0.0 from our download section at Sourceforge.net. Documentation including installation instructions may also be found at http://sue.sourceforge.net. * News: ******* * New Release - Version 1.0.0 SUE version 1.0.0 has been released. It has, again, become more stable, many new features have been implemented and numerous bugs have been fixed. In order to install SUE on Ubuntu 9.04 there is an installation script provided in our Download section at http://sourcefor.ge.net/projects/sue/files/sue/InstallScripts/install_9.04.sh/download. In that section you may also find installation scripts for eSpeak including our German voices as well as for mbrola. http://sourcefor.ge.net/projects/sue/files/sue/InstallScripts/install_mbrola.sh/download http://sourcefor.ge.net/projects/sue/files/sue/InstallScripts/install_espeak_voices.sh/download In addition, we are also offering "SUEbuntu", a Live-CD including Ubuntu 9.04 with an integrated version of SUE in the same location. * General . When navigating in text lines or multi-line text areas, speech output for "line begin" and "line end" is now provided. . We have forced the application name to be "SUE" so AT-SPI gets the correct application name. . SUE settings are now saved upon system shutdown. . To ensure quality, unit tests have been added to SUE. * Braille Monitor . Selections are now shown on the Braille monitor. * Dokumentation / WIKI . We have updated the installation instructions for SUE both on the German and the English wiki. . Some wiki pages have been translated to Hungarian. * Internationalization . SUE is now available in romanian, too! Bun venit, utilizatorilor români! * Bugfixes: *********** Bug: In OpenOffice.org SUE read the wrong line when paragraphs have been switched using word jump (Ctrl+Right Arrow). Bug: SUE did not output insertions in GNOME terminal. Bug: The extra "delete" output for sliders has been removed. SUE will now only output "delete" if no "insert" follows. Evolution bugs: . Redundant line begins / multiple announcements of "line begin" at the very first position in e-mail writing . SUE used to get wrong character and item offsets in multi-line text areas. . SUE "forgot" to announce the empty e-mail text area when tabbing there for the first time. . Inbetween inserting text into a text field and tabbing to the next one, SUE skipped the "inserted" message (How dare she!? *smile*) . SUE did not output the first selection move after a line begin or a line end since Evolution still had the old caret position. . SUE did not announce a new line in the e-mail text area. All these Evolution bugs are now fixed. *smile* Bug: Typing into Nautilus file manager activates a little filter dialog where the filter is applied upon pressing Enter. SUE used to crash if filtering resulted in no matching file. We told her not to do so anymore. Bug: If the first character in an inserted text is a space, SUE did only output "inserted". This is now fixed and SUE correctly outputs "inserted space". Bug: SUE did not read "space" or "tab" when moving by caret. Now she does. Bug: A text selection over multiple lines lead to SUE outputting the wrong selected text. This now works as expected. Bug: When opening windows in the background, SUE did not use the background voice to speak them. This is now fixed, too. If you are interested in testing SUE but experience problems at any point, please don't hesitate to send a message to this mailing list. If you find a bug, you may add it to our bug tracker on SourceForge.net or send an e-mail with your bug description to sue...@it.... A few notes on how to submit a bug in either of those ways and which information to include are available on both our project wiki at http://www.sue-projekt.de (in German) and our documentation page at SourceForge.net (in English). To request a feature, you may use the same means of communication. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all SUE users! Thank you for your support and feedback! The SUE team |
