New to stream ripper...so I hope my question is not to fare off base for this forum.  I just started using stream ripper, well actually I am using station ripper but their forum said to post questions here.  Anyway I am unable to play some of the recorded streams on my portable mp3 player.  Yes I know…it’s a player issue not a stream ripper issue but the odd thing is that some work and some don’t.

Here is what’s going on.  Using station ripper I create 6 rips.  I copy these to my mp3 player and 2 work and 4 won’t play.  I go back into station ripper and rip 5 minutes of a shoutcast stream and copy this over to my mp3 player.  Works fine.  I go back into station ripper start a new rip of the exact same stream, rip for 5 minutes and copy this over to my mp3 player and it will not play.  Mind you all the mp3’s that are recorded work in winamp and windows media player.

I have tried making a number of different rips and some work and some don’t.  Originally I thought it could be file size or file naming, etc. but I have eliminated all this.  Basically, I do a recording and it works, I go back and do the exact same recording and it does not work.

Any suggestions on why this might happen?

:) Okay, problem solved...it turns out that my player did not like to play mp3's that are not tagged with the artist, title and genre information.  For whatever reason, stream ripper would include this on some rips and not others causing some of my mp3's to play and others to fail.  Although I am not sure why some rips have this and others don't, but that is a different topic.

Using winamp I was able to edit this info and add the missing data so all is working.

      Really?  How odd.

Id3v1 always has artist, title, and genre.  Artist and title could be blank. For id3v2, streamripper always adds artist & title, but sometimes they may be blank. There is no genre, but there is a "content type" (TCON). Streamripper doesn't add TCON.

There is one special item to note.  I think for incomplete files (first and last file ripped), you don't get id3.

Can you tell which player(s) this problem exists?  Might be worth (optionally) adding bogus data such as "Artist Unknown", "Title Unknown".
