This happens with Insertion and Healing Vision, 
downloaded from 
http://miryokuteki.xodian.net/ddre/downloads/

StepMania crashes with following message

D3DXGetImageInfoFromFile() failed for 
file 'songs\animated bg's\insertion\freeze'.
(D3DXERR_INVALIDDATA)

only seems to happen to songs which have a freeze 
directory for the animated backgrounds.
