Category: Performance Issues Group: Current: v4.0 CVS >Status: Pending Priority: 5 Submitted By: mym (xmym) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: choppy arrows, menu lags Initial Comment: The arrows movement is a bit choppy, making hard to play the game. I think I'm not alone with this problem as I've seen some posts dealing about this subject (http://www.ddrmaniax.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=1482, http://www.ddrmaniax.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=1440, http://www.ddrmaniax.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=816), but no real solution was given. I've done a lot of different tests, but the problem persists. Here follows my config and my tests, please help. Config: Hardware: Pentium M 2Ghz, ATI X700 128Mo, 1024Mo DDR2, Audio: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller Software: Linux Ubuntu Dapper, ati fglrx drivers Stepmania 3.9 info.txt: http://intuxication.org/~mym/SM/info.txt Stepmania 3.9 log.txt: http://intuxication.org/~mym/SM/log.txt Tests: Graphic drivers: 8.24.8 and several older versions, direct rendering is on (as shown by glxinfo and many 3D games) Stepmania version: 3.9 and several CVS 4.0 versions (including the May 9th's one) Stepmania config: tested with several screen resolutions, options (graphic quality, sound quality, VSync, ...) Window manager: Gnome, KDE and failsafe Sound: tested with sound disabled (Sound driver: Null) in Stepmania 4.0 CVS (even by removing my audio module driver snd_intel8x0) Daemons: tested with near all daemons disabled The 'top' tool says there is no processus taking CPU resources before I start Stepmania. With all these tests I still have some lags in the menu and when playing a music (choppy arrows). If I reduce the resolution, the graphic quality, sound quality, I can reduce the lags but it's not perfect at all. With my hardware config I shouldn't have any lags (UT2004 runs very fine with all options enabled). It will be closed in 2 weeks automatically if no further changes are made. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: mym (xmym) Date: 2006-08-02 03:32 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1517193 I just tried the new fglrx drivers (8.27.10) and the lags have left. This test needs to be confirmed but it seems the fglrx bug/glitch have been corrected. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: mym (xmym) Date: 2006-06-22 06:34 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1517193 My only test with something else was with Knoppix, and this test revealed the bug with recent ATI drivers as I had no choppy arrows with old drivers and lags with recent drivers. However knoppix is based on a Debian, the same for Ubuntu. I agree most of users reporting this problem are using Ubuntu. I only found this player: http://www.ddrmaniax.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=1482 who uses another distro (Gentoo). I cannot easily install another distro on my laptop so I cannot test with something different from Ubuntu. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Steve Checkoway (stevecheckoway) Date: 2006-06-22 05:58 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=759779 I honestly have no idea why I closed it. I don't recall closing it and I almost never close a bug report without giving a reason. My guess is that this appears to be a Ubuntu problem, not a SM problem. Can you give any idea why you think this is a SM problem when it runs on other distros without this problem? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: mym (xmym) Date: 2006-06-06 01:44 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1517193 stevecheckoway, why have you closed this bug report ? It has been confirmed by the Ubuntu development team. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: mym (xmym) Date: 2006-06-01 02:34 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1517193 The bug has been confirmed by the Ubuntu development team, bug #44391 : https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/xorg-driver-fglrx/+bug/44391 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: mym (xmym) Date: 2006-05-25 04:50 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1517193 Here are 2 guys having the same problem: http://www.bemanistyle.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=516449&sid=7ce9c1aeed1c5cc4a5992cfab8331dba#516449 (in French) http://linuxfr.org/comments/714509.html#714509 Here are 2 guys using recent ati drivers but not having the same problem (note that they have old ATI cards and Xorg < 7.0): http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=1035344&postcount=7 http://www.happypenguin.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=15991&sid=192fe0f01947779b22305e7d97eae2b9#15991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: mym (xmym) Date: 2006-05-25 04:43 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1517193 I cannot use dri (opensource) drivers as they do not provide 3D acceleration for recent ATI cards (like mine), except in the dev version (CVS), but PCI Express cards are not yet supported :( To conclude I cannot still play Stepmania on my Ubuntu Dapper. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: mym (xmym) Date: 2006-05-25 04:18 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1517193 With my Ubuntu Dapper system, I cannot install drivers 8.21.x as they cause freeze of 3D apps. I remember they were working fine with Ubuntu Breezy. I've just tried out the last ATI fglrx drivers 8.25 but I still have lags. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: mym (xmym) Date: 2006-05-15 02:03 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1517193 There is still a problem: I cannot downgrade to 8.21.7 with Ubuntu Dapper... maybe cause of Xorg 7.0. I found all the tools to build my own 8.21.7 Ubuntu Dapper packages, but 3D apps freeze... with more recent drivers (8.22.x, 8.23.x and 8.24.x) I have lags in Stepmania but no freeze with 3D apps... The only solutions I see is either to: 1. downgrade Ubuntu to Breezy or 2. change my distro or 3. create my own livecd (based on knoppix for example) to play Stepmania or 4. wait the next ATI Linux driver, hopping the bug will be fixed or 5. wait a further Stepmania CVS version, hopping they will find a waork around. I prefer 4 or 5 currently... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: mym (xmym) Date: 2006-05-12 05:36 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1517193 Apparently my tests were biased as I've just done some new tests with older ATI fglrx drivers and the lags have disappeared ! I used a Knoppix LiveCD, then I installed fglrx 8.24.8 which caused lags, next I tried with 8.21.7 and the game became very smooth :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=421366&aid=1484470&group_id=37892 |
