If the Meade LT 8 uses the same control protocol as earlier autostars it should work.
However first make sure the telescope control plugin has been activated and that the cable to the telescope is correctly terminated and connected to a COM port. If you are driving the COM port from the USB make sure a suitable USB/COM adapter is in fact compatible and has its drivers loaded.
I have not seen the LT8 but I can control my LX200 and my ETX125 OK from Stellarium on Ubunto 8.xx thru 12.04 at least once the plugin is loaded.
