If you're using an IP address rather than a hostname, then all a STAF PING request does is a straight socket() call to open the socket. If you are specifying a hostname then STAF does a gethostbyname() and then the socket() call. Given how NETBIOS over TCP/IP works, perhaps a gethostbyname() tries to do a WINS resolution. However, I'm not an expert on that area of windows. If you have it enabled, you could try disabling the WINS name resolution on your system(s) (via your TCP/IP settings) and see if that improves things. -------------------------------------------------------------- Sharon Lucas IBM Austin, lu...@us... We notice that a staf ping from the stax service machine to any of the test machines takes between 5-6 seconds(regular ping is instantaneous). We are running staf V3.2.0.1 on all of the boxes in this environment. None of the connect attempts are failing ( we see no warning on the staf proc console after setting STAF machine TRACE ENABLE TRACEPOINT Warning). Also, staf ping from a couple of boxes from a different subnet(running staf V3.2.0.1 & os Windows XP) to the stax service machine and the test machines takes a second or so. Thoughts on what the problem might be with staf ping being so slow on just the boxes within the same subnet? --Ragu It's here! Your new message! Get new email alerts with the free Yahoo!
