#2 Import of ACE databases

There are some new highly sophisticated assemblers
(e.g. ARACHNE or ATLAS).

Unfortunately the alignment outputs are only produced
in ACE database format used by CONSED.

It would be very useful to have an import interface for
ACE databases to the better alignment editor gap4.

The solution to this already exists in the guise of
caftools. It has ace2caf, caf2ace, gap2caf and caf2gap
programs. This should allow transferring in both directions
with caf (Common Assembly Format) being the interchange
format. This seems like an emminently sensible approach to
tackle this problem.

Unfortunately at present the caftools version on the Sanger
ftp site is out of date. We have a new version that needs
tidying up and putting there. I'll post again here when that
is done.
