Hi All, i have resolved the NIC problem but stuck in sbin/init script. it mount the devfs file system which is unsuccessfull. i.e it is throwing error "unknow file system, unable to mount devfs." anyone can help in this regard. Hi , i have tried the steps which was mentioned in the above link(install log open SSI on lenny) when i am booting my machine i am getting following error. "mount error :unable to mount devfs filesystem." can not find NIC with static IP configuration. Yeah a SSI is pretty useless without HPC card support. Lack of migration of shared memory chunks of a few kilobytes each is in fact a smaller problem than this, though pretty crucial as well. OpenMosix was doing that, yet stopped in 2008. If i download what's left of OpenMosix i get a zip file of just a couple of hundreds of kilobyte. Not just this, about all sorts of objective tests there was in HPC, they no longer get published on the net it seems. Nowadays you'll have to do with the manufacturer info - which is very objective info of course. I've got here some QDR infiniband cards and a SSI would be pretty useful for it. Yet ethernet is a tad slow sort of protocol of course. The cards do that at 10 gigabit. They're however 40 gigabit (bi- directional) at non-ethernet standards. You don't want to throw that away of course. Note it's still useless to me without capability of migrating shared memory - and not the entire gigabytes, but of course migrating just a few kilobytes at a time... > >> is it require two NIC card enable machine for first node? > > just one NIC is fine IMHO. > > you need two NICs if the first node will act as kinda gateway to the > another LAN...so the cluster is "isolated". > >> Which linux disribution is best for this software. > > Debian IMHO.. > > -- > regards, > > Mulyadi Santosa > Freelance Linux trainer and consultant > > blog: the-hydra.blogspot.com > training: mulyaditraining.blogspot.com > > ---------------------------------------------------------------------- > -------- > Live Security Virtual Conference > Exclusive live event will cover all the ways today's security and > threat landscape has changed and how IT managers can respond. > Discussions > will include endpoint security, mobile security and the latest in > malware > threats. http://www.accelacomm.com/jaw/sfrnl04242012/114/50122263/ > _______________________________________________ > Ssic-linux-users mailing list > Ssi...@li... > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/ssic-linux-users |

One way I can think very quickly now, is by using software called batch scheduler, let's say Sun Grid Engine. Queue the jobs that works on each of your MRI files, let's say 16 jobs. Configure the batch scheduler to spread the job on your nodes. That way, in my opinion, you will achieve parallelism. Again, with the help of cluster file system, you will easily manage those MRI files from single place. -- regards, Mulyadi Santosa Freelance Linux trainer and consultant blog: the-hydra.blogspot.com training: mulyaditraining.blogspot.com |

In my opinion, the best openSSI can help here is by offering CFS (Clustered file system). That way, your data is accessible regardless in which node (computer) it runs. As you said, you already run Oracle Grid Engine, so I guess you already have good foundation to form the grid. OpenSSI can indeed does process migration, but not thread migration. But in most cases, process aren't migrated to maximize locality. -- regards, Mulyadi Santosa Freelance Linux trainer and consultant blog: the-hydra.blogspot.com training: mulyaditraining.blogspot.com |

Hi : Best approach is .... I'dont know .... OpenSSI if for process migration (distribution along machines's CPU's), if your software is multithread sure don't works ... By the other hand, image processing genarally is boosted not using CPU but GPU since they works with vectors. Probably using only a few GPU cards (Nvidia/CUDA, AMD-ATI) you can lower your times ... If the DHCP server on the 1st node is not seeing the requests from the PXE boot client on the 2nd node maybe you have some kind of network problem. Check the wiring. Maybe try tcpdump on the 1st node to see if you're getting any traffic from the 2nd node. |

Hi People I succeeded to install the root node openssi with debian lenny and the openssi 1.9.6. After adding next-server [IP]; to the dhcp3.proto and did mkdhcpd.conf the .conf file showed at the bottom ddns-update-style none; and in the host node 1 is this added. filename "/pxelinux.0"; Following the guide http://deb.openssi.org/openssi/dists/1.9.6-lenny-preview/install-log.html When it says "Boot the second node into etherboot and use ssi-addnode to add it to the cluster:" My second node is a machine with motherboard asus m2n-mx; I changed the boot option in the bios to the nforce adapter (network) but when I try to add to the main node, his mac address is not listed. What should I do to the second node? it is necessary to install the ssi kernel to it? Thanks people for all the help! |

To John Hughes or Whom It May Concern: Our research group is interested in setting up an OpenSSI cluster which would use several 48-core Dell R815 machines at first, and possibly be extended to include up to five 12-core Dell PowerEdge 2970 servers, all based on Debian Lenny (we currently have Debian version 5.0.5 installed, and may upgrade to 5.0.8). We'd like to run the whole system off of amd64 binaries, since we'll be utilizing large amounts of processors, memory, and disk space -- well in excess of the standard limits on a generic 32-bit installation. However, we were somewhat concerned by indications from previous messages, such as: http://deb.openssi.org/openssi/dists/1.9.6-lenny-preview/ http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.cluster.ssic.user/4825/ indicating that the 64-bit version is untested and buggy. When I looked at the bug tracker on sourceforge, I couldn't see any open bug reports that appeared specific to 64-bit architectures. So my question is, are there any current known bugs specific to the 64-bit architecture? If so, what are they, and what can we do to solve them? Thank you very much! Sincerely, Peter |

Hi David, A lot of things can cause that error. You'll get it any time a node is netbooting and is able to fetch the kernel, but the kernel isn't able to configure an ethernet or network device that's on the list of nodes it got from the master node, and talk to the master node. There's a lot that can go wrong in there. Even though that OpenSSI is built on Lenny, the OpenSSI kernel that gets installed is based on an older version of Linux. Even though Lenny can find and configure your ethernet card, OpenSSI's kernel that gets installed may not be able to. I like to encourage people to get a thoroughly well established network card, such as a 3com 509, just to get things running. If you get a 3c509, get one with the boot ROM. I've had bad luck with open source netbooters with that card. Reading through the release notes of the version of Linux that that version of OpenSSI is based on should tell you if your current ethernet card is supported. I'm running OpenSSI on AMD, too. Good luck, and continue to ask questions when you get stuck. OpenSSI can be a touch cranky to get going. L2: 1 MB. RAM: 2 GB DDR-2 800 MHz. Hard Disk: 120 GB, SCSI de 15,000 rpm. Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC. M2N-MX SE Plus System Bus Speed: 800 MHz. System Memory Speed: 667 MHz. Intel Gigabit Ethernet. forcedeth: Reverse Engineered nForce ethernet driver. Version 0.61. I tried to install openssi-alpha and openssi 1.9.6 both in a debian lenny minimum installed system. What I always get is ERROR: Could not find a NIC with a static node configuration Dynamically alloating an IP address and node number ERROR: Could not find the NIC used to add this node to the cluster Unable to continue. Halting Openssi has issues with the forcedeth network card?? Regards!! D. |

I run a OpenSSI-cluster just for playing in a home network, each cluster member with one ethernet card only. So, it is possible. But for a "real" application, you have to regard the performance and load of your network traffic, of course. Regards, Robert |

Well, ideally you need 2 nics, because that provides good isolation between the two network -- regards, Mulyadi Santosa Freelance Linux trainer and consultant blog: the-hydra.blogspot.com training: mulyaditraining.blogspot.com |
