Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development. With many thanks for your participation, Benno Luthiger PS: The results of the survey will be published under http://www.isu.unizh.ch/fuehrung/blprojects/FASD/. We have set up the mailing list fa...@we... for this study. Please see http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/mailinglist_en.html for registration to this mailing list. _______________________________________________________________________ Benno Luthiger Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich 8092 Zurich Mail: benno.luthiger(at)id.ethz.ch _______________________________________________________________________ |

I have updated the IDL in CVS, please check it out. (Code/idl/CaseAlarm.idl) The following still needs to be changed: 1. I am waiting on the database team to commit the updated schema so i can change the CaseEvent / CaseDiagnostic / NetworkTypology structures to comply with their stuff. Please do this asap :) 2. Mark needs to give me the actual function names for the GUI interface classes. 3. I need to figure out stuff about the NetworkTypology tommorow, (To late for me tonight, alas) thanks, Thomas |

Dear Developers, Joe and myself are going to develop a little program to test the units = of the CAsE. I need you guys to add to a wish list, which is located = under Testing/CSIM.=20 At the moment there is just some crap that i noted down sometime ago. = Please feel free to add your desires to it. This list will be considered = when preparing semi-formal LLD, which is going for semi-formal review = on thursday. What i currently invisage is that it will generate a whole heap of alarm = data and possibly will plug into any CAsE module. Of course time = permitting. One thing to remember is that we are hoping to get a full = blown SNMP simulator, so our program is not a replacement but merely a = low level test tool. Igor |

Hey people, i m glad to see that people are now used to uni CVS. The = fact that we all used cvs before helped a lot (thnx to daniel for = setting it up and explaining how it works). So far the uni server = rolling pretty smooth and pretty fast. I have noticed, however, that not all people are using it. For those = three who havent submitted any files yet: Please SET IT UP NOW. It will make your life A LOT EASIER if you got it = working NOW rather than when you really need it, ie after starting = coding. I will send a personal reminders to the three people that i suspect = havent got the cvs set up yet. Later, Igor. |

Ok guys, First of all thanks for the card, the drinks (dunno how I will get through that) and your presence for the ssd dinner and my b-day celebration. I appreciate all your support and I look forward to "delivering a high quality product" with everyone... In ummm 7 WEEKS!!! DAMN!! Ok now that the fun and games are over its time to get working (again) 1) timesheets due (get em in 2moro night) on the new CVS 2) get your design considerations document in.. This is due on Thursday night (9 PM) 3) tommorow night the SDD document will be up on the CVS.. In it will be the near complete sections. Each group MUST COMPLETE their PART if it is marked TBC. Added to this will be an email (for each group), in word format, telling you which sections you have to complete in ORDER OF PRIORITY. I will almost guarantee that to expect anything super low level like pseudocode or the method level will NOT be completed. WE will Complete what we can.. But we will knock off section by section in order of priority. This deliverable is due on Thursday night along with your Software design considerations. To manage the CHAOS of integration. Individual sections shall be either emailed to me or put on CVS in word Format. DO NOT FILL IN THE SDD Document on the CVS. This is only for your reference (to get a feel for what the section is trying to accomplish) Just as an update to where we stand on development - Joe, Arun will be working hard to set up an infrastructure over the next week - Tom has got the rudimentary corba connections somewhat working. This weekend is rest weekend for the SSD CASE team. You've all earned it. Take a break. Lets refocus and get prepared to deliver this product. Many thanks. And keep up the hard work. Dasco This email was sent @ 12:58 am .. Sourceforge really pissing me off.. Emails are coming a day late! ARGH!!! Sourceforge list SUX!!! TEST TEST TEST |

Hello All, I trust everyone is aware of the changes to the LLDs and the incorporation of a new section called Design Considerations. If you are not you are either A) Not affected B) A member in your group has received the relevant information. On a totally different note however. The structure of the ArchHLD module in the CVS has now been changed. Please go over to http://swordfish.eng.uts.edu.au and have a look. The structure has changed in a bid for the directory to be more logically controlled and also to force people to get on the new CVS swordfish server. For those already working on the new CVS server you must checkout the whole module again to capture the directory changes. You can not commit nor update properly unless you do so. If you are not on the new CVS server please Get on it and download the module. I expect a lot more CVS restructuring will take place. But the ArchHLD was the most pressing module.. Keep up the hardwork guys..I know you've all got a lot on your plate. Keep focussed. Keep Positive. Also There is a meeting for presentation 2moro September 8th from 6:30 onwards at the level 22 labs. Thanks, Dasco |

Good stuff Igor, We now have a cvs on eng servers. People people people The meeting with Zenon was again very enlightening... The key things that were pointed out: - the Document wasn't very readable -- this will have to be fixed up by my group and communicate the changes down the line - what is expected from the presentation - we have jumped straight into design WITHOUT justifying our design decisions (THIS IS CRITICAL FOR BOTH THE DELIVERABLE AND THE PRESENTATION) Now presentation structure: 1) A brief recap of our problem domain 2) Our group structure.. Our current position. Our plans Our Goals, our Qa Processes 3) A presentation of the architecture and HLD based on a justified approach. Subystems 5 minutes each - Major goals, Major inputs, the purpose - Design Considerations (experience, comfort, performance, technical constraints, resources at our disposal) - Technological Decisions (e.g Mysql, Ilogs, Corba, Pushlets, Servlets, What else did you consider) - Based on those your final (still a bit high) design - Its major features and components. - Advantages and disadvantages of your design. Test team - Same thing - Your integration plans - The tools we are going to be using , why those tools?? What considerations did u have to make? (experience, availability) Summary... The way ahead! Now I know this is a bit brief.. . But that those in attendance probably I believe have a clear understanding on what is required. Now 2moro.. I will be finalising the presentation template.. An email will go out. Further to that I will be calling a member from each team to ensure that they are clear on what is expected. And what must be delivered. (yes a personal call to voice all your concerns) Over the weekend we will also be coordinating the merging of the main deliverable document. For the presentation, each team's slides are due SATURDAY NIGHT 11 pm. Please Meet the deadline. Its not that hard. The Hard part is actually the content behind the slides. I leave that up to you. Keep up the hard work guys... Make sure you also have fun Also remain aware of the CVS changeover... More as it comes to hand. And the progreport is up on CVS and is due for delivery any minute now. Regards and many thanks, Dasco PS don't forget my dinner. The budget is 15 bux a head.. Any more is coming out of your wallets. Hope to see you all there. |

Hello People! As you all know, we had a review with Zenon today where we went over the Arch, the HLD and the LLD. As a result, we need to resolve some problems that Zenon has identified! Again, we are working on a very tight schedule! All these tasks MUST be finished by TOMORROW (Wednesday 3rd Sept)! Notice these are not such major problems, but they just need to be DONE! I guess, this also shows that we are on the right track! Good work guys! Deadline for completion and resubmission to CVS is Wednesday!! (3rd sept) Below, I shall list the requisite tasks along with a description, and which group it is assigned to! Feel free to contact either Tom or Me regarding these. I would suggest Tom, since I shall be at work during the day! ------------------------------------- Document: High Level Design Assigned to: Arun ------------------------------------- 1. Make the UML Package diagram comply with correct UML. (or as close as drawing package allows) 2. Depict Events Simulator within the Package diagram 3. Add the ILOG package to the Package diagram. It will be associated only with the ILogRulesEngine package that is depicted. 4. Add some package to show the Test tools for the Database maintenance. Basically, the thing that will be used to inject the typology into the Database. (purely a testing package, and is not part of our responsibility. but needs to be depicted) ------------------------------------- Document: Low Level Design Assigned to: Indicated the groups below ------------------------------------- ------------------------------------- Section: Message format Assigned to: Event's Receiver Group ------------------------------------- 1. Consideration of other message formats such as ATMs or SMIPs... (you may or may not choose to address this, if not, provide some justification of why only SNMP messages were considered - maybe mention the layer at which we're operating and why ATM is below the necessary layer etc) 2. The following fields that Zenon has identified HAVE to go in. Please add them to the table of message fields. Where necessary (as in the non-obvious ones), I am providing all the information necessary, so you may choose to copy-paste (however, feel free to elaborate on the descriptions or specific field names, if you deem it necessary) CircuitID - Domain - Ports - Source and/or destination ports of the messages ArrivalTime - This is a timestamp applied to the MIB when the message arrives into the Event Receiver. It's meant to factor in the possible delay time between when the time the message was generated and when it was received. (difference between our TimeGenerated and the ArrivalTime) Direction - The direction of travel of the event Priority - An integer priority value assigned to the event to aid in correlation. Sequence Number - This is an extremely important field because events may be (and probably will be) received in haph hazard fashion where they are not received in the sequence that they are transmitted in. ------------------------------------- Section: Database Schema Assigned to: Database Team ------------------------------------- 1. Please depict the relationships between the tables as an ER diagram (Side note: the rest of our LLD is in object oriented methodologies, an ER diagram seemingly contradicts this approach. However, given that it is a RELATIONAL database that we have chosen to use, we cannot rely on OO methodologies to model the schema. Hence, Zenon shall accept the use of an ER model here.) ------------------------------------- Section: System Core Assigned to: Arun & Tom ------------------------------------- 1. In the class diagram, clarify the need to have a Rules DB as well as the ILOG Rules XML Package. Remove unnecessary redundancy, if it appears to be such. If not, JUSTIFY! - Arun 2. Translate above changes into the Sequence diagrams, if necesary - Arun 3. In the notification of Events Receiver (sequence diagram) - Do not clear the buffer before the core has finished processing the event/(block of events) - Arun 3. Reduce any possible sources of blocking within the design. Convert synchronous communication to Asynchronous comms - Tom ------------------------------------- Section: ***GUI*** Assigned to: Tom + GUI team ------------------------------------- ** I didnt write down the points here, because I know you guys did, and are already working ont he solutions. Apologies to everyuone else who might have been interested in the current design revisions going on in the GUI. Thanks a lot Good luck with your respective tasks! Keep the Wednesday night deadline in mind! Arun PS: Happy Birthday Mark! I shall be at the dinner! |

Guys, Timesheet Due.. 11 pm Wed 3rd September. Also the test guys are finalising the CVS server on swordfish.eng.uts.edu.au. Please check your email regarding migration issues. We are expecting to switch over as of 12 midnight Friday 5th. More details as it comes to hand. Igor sould be circulating a document soon regarding the details. We are also looking at hardcore CVS functions to better manage our builds. The test team may/may not run a presentation on this (keep me posted Joe). After the main deliverable next week, I was planning on some 'workshops' by key people on technologies we will be using for the build. Keep posted. Exciting stuff. Also NEXT TUESDAY'S DINNER IS ALSO A CELEBRATION FOR Mark Dasco's 23rd Year on Earth! i.e B-day! What better way to spend it than with the CASE group hehehe. Please don't leave me nigelated!
