OK, I just tried and was successful. Victory! :)

Actually it was really simple. Just unpack the plugin tgz and do the
plugin "thing" in the conf.pl program.

As I had no clue how to check that it was really installed properly, I
tried installing another plugin that claimed to be dependent of
Compatibility. And that works also, so I guess it's save to say that the
"problem" is solved.

However, I do feel that the INSTALL file needs updating to reflect this
much simpler procedure.
