If SM is a web-based Email client I don't understand why
an IMAP server is absolutely required. The support for it
is great, but isn't normal POP3 authentication the
normal for authentication? That would be like ISPs
having to be required to run IMAP servers in order to
offer Email accounts.

Currently SM is a web-based IMAP-client.
POP3 authentication for an IMAP-account is insane.
If an ISP supports webmail then the ISP also runs an IMAP-
server

We don't, and several ISPs that I know of personally, don't.
We've had to settle for Open Webmail.

POP3 for a webmail client is just a workaround. It's way
more efficient to set up an IMAP server to put behind your
webmail client. What I did is install an IMAP server which
only listens on the local loop interface (127.0.0.1) so the
webserver can use it but it isn't open for customers from home.

SM is a web-based IMAP client. Therefore it requires an
IMAP server.
