I have the same problem with SquirrelMail 1.4.2 and 1.4.4.
The impression that one has is that the implementation
traverses the full mailbox (which probably takes too long,
more than the 30 second default upper limit for a PHP
script). All this work, to display a single HTML page that
can't show all messages anyway. Sigh.
Certainly this algorithm can be improved ? Only traverse
what can be shown in a page. It will run a lot faster.

Ideally these options should be ON by default, and not off.
Since moderns IMAP servers support these things, why
make teh poor guy suffer troubleshooting SquirrelMail ?
Maybe 1.4.5 makes these options teh defaults ?

SquirrelMail 1.5.1cvs uses server side sorting, if server
declares support of SORT extension in CAPABILITY response.
SquirrelMail can issue server side sorting commands that
cause errors in cyrus-imap, incorrectly compiled
courier-imap, bincimap and maybe in other IMAP servers. If
SquirrelMail enables server side sorting by default, it
would only replace one error with another.

Update to 1.5.1cvs or enable server side sorting if your
server supports it.

Algorithm is improved in 1.5.1cvs.
Same suggestion - enable server side sorting if you can or
test 1.5.1cvs.

Please verify with the latest 1.5.1 release or 1.5.1-cvs.
Thanks.
