with http://openjdk.java.net/jeps/263 the high resolution problem in Java was fixed.
SQuirreL SQL on a high resolution screen is very very tiny!
When I start it with Ubuntu 18.04, java-11-openjdk-amd64 I get this error message:
"Your Java Virtual Machine must be at least 1.8 to run SQuirreL 3.x and above
JVM Version used: 10.0.1
JVM Location: /usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk-amd64"
--> this doesn't make sence, since I am use at least 1.8
I am using the lastest SQuirreL - Version 3.8.1

The version check message is sure misleading and has just been changed in our GIT repository. The change will be available in future snapshots and versions.

Nonetheless version 3.8.1 does not support Java 10. Only the latest snapshots do. So please consider to try out the latest from here:
    https://sourceforge.net/projects/squirrel-sql/files/3-snapshots/

    perfect. works now.

high resolution displays are still not fixed out of the box.
my solution now with java11 and ubuntu 18.10 that works:
    added in squirrel-sql.sh:

    export GDK_SCALE=2
