"oracle8" just refers to the version of OCI that the code uses.

oracle8 = OCI8

OCI8 is supported by oracle 8,8i,9i and 10g.

I used to have an oracle7 connection which used OCI7.   I added
"oracle8" later when oracle stopped supporting OCI7.
