Interesting to note -- not sure if it is helpful or practical to use, but at
least interesting -- Jython does not treat locals() in a function as
read-only.  In other words, in Jython:

def foo():
    x = 1
    locals()[ 'x' ] = 2
    print x

...will print '2'.  (http://www.jython.org/docs/differences.html)
