Lars,

Thanks for your feedback - this is important since it is easy to verify that my
code works in my own "sandbox", but not that easy to verify that it works
everywhere else.

Documentation is key for most developers - that's why it is hard to beat out
Struts at the moment.

You are correct when you say that Part 3 is not as polished as Parts 1 and 2 - I
am still working on it and I will verify that it all works on both Tomcat and a
few other servers including WebLogic 8.1.  I just ran through Parts 1 and 2
deploying as a war file on WebLogic, and I have made a few changes to both
parts.  I added a task to deploy as a war file and I also added a deploy.path in
build.properties where you can specify a path to your deployment location.  If
you are not using Tomcat, then you can remove all the Tomcat stuff from
build.xml (everything related to Tomcat is now clearly marked at the end of the
build script).  I'll follow up with updates to Part 3 later today or tomorrow.

Hi everyone,

I think the two points focused by Lars are very important for the future
of Spring.

1) As Isabelle cannot longer take the tutorial in charge, we will have
to organize this point at a very high priority.

2) It will be good to make the tour of Application servers skills in the
team. The goal would be to make run the demos on the most used AS and
adjust the Ant scripts.

Currently PetClinic is tested on TomCat and JBoss , Countries on JBoss.
We will have to define the servers for which we will have as targets.
Obviously Websphere and Weblogic can difficultly be skipped if we tend
to have a large audience. The rest depends mainly on skills we can
found, but Orion or Oracle iAS could also be choices.

For people having experience with one of these servers, it should not be
a huge task. Having knowledge on our framework, it's simpler for us as
for Spring newbies.

Together, the two points should largely facilitate the jumping into
Spring. I think it's a goal for 1.0RC.

As time goes by, I'll dig deeper into the framework and learn more about
the
details :-)

There are two points I want you to keep in memory:

1.) The step-by-step tutorial is very important. There are teams where
less
skilled developers are included.
With WW, it was very hard to explain even the basics to them and it did
cost
me a lot of time. With a good
tutorial these developers can start themselves.

2.) Use WebLogic and WebSphere regularly to test the framework ! Another
mistake with WW is that their
developers don't test on these servers. There are several versions of WW
that simply don't work properly
with WebLogic. I don't have to explain the importance of these
(commercial)
products for larger enterprises.
We never had any demand for JBoss.

For time being, the tutorial is disconnected from the tutorials/Demos.
It's useful to understand basics of Spring, but to go further, the
Petclinic and Countries Demos are best suited.
Having a standard war is just a little issue due to the database bound
with the application server as this is not in the standard.
Nevertheless, we just modified the Petclinic Demo to work both with
Tomcat and JBoss. JBoss is more close to the standard way of bounding.
This is available in the CVS and in the very soon upcoming 0.9.1.
For using with WebLogic, you will have to configure the database in the
application server and modify the Ant script to include a WebLogic
specific file for bounding the application JNDI name to the real one as
the provided jboss-web.xml does for JBoss.

The issue you encountered with the tutorial is mainly due as it is
out-of-dated. Mainly, the xml bean-definition file syntax has changed.
You will have to understand things like

We are aware that the tutorial has to grow up and be updated, but we
rely only on volunteer resources.

It just let you to explicit the mapping in a very modulable fashion and
has another role: defining the beans and factories, even initializing
certain of them with others. This let you work mainly with interfaces

Remember that Spring is not just a MVC Web framework as WW or Struts,
but covers all the layers from CLIENT up to DATA passing by BUSINESS.

we just use JBoss' log4J service. Just add the Category configurations
to
the JBoss' master config  file like :

I just committed changes on config files. By testing, I was stopped by
the log4j configuration file once more.

I have in fact two issues.

1) As I heard on a JBoss List, the log4j architecture doesn't allow two
masters. So the JBoss config and the application one are a bit tied and
have to be at least a bit compatible.

As this, I cannot, for example, redefine the console. I had this error

7.0 and WebWork (1.3) for the MVC part and as Spring documentation grows, I
want to compare both solutions and maybe move to Spring at a later point.

- First of all I'd like to have a standard war created as a result of the
tutorial, not a specific Tomcat solution as I normally don't use Tomcat and I
don't want to figure out how exactly Tomcat works (time is extremely limited!)
- The whole solutiuon seems to be more complicated compared to WebWork. In
WW I have a file named actions.xml (or views.properties) and an action for
every form and that's it. Actions.xml is much simpler than
springapp-servlet.xml.
- The first two parts of the tutorial are very good and worked well. The
third seems to be written in a hurry and doesn't work at all (at least on my
system). 
- The tutorial should have more than 4 chapters, e. g. validation should
have it's own chapter and should be explained in detail.
- Why do I need "SpringAppController" ? Is this some base init class ?
Mapping of model and view should be handled automatically.

Do not understand this as some kind of bad criticism. I just want to give
feedback and help improve the project.
Documentation IS VERY GOOD, WW still doesn't have a useful tutorial !
There are more things to come where I also want to give feedback (especially
concerning  the points where I had problems with WW), but first I have to
get more experience with Spring.

I tried now to run Petclinic with JBoss.

The fact is that the JBoss approach differs slightly from the Tomcat
one. Just as the databases and logging are set by JBoss, it=92s only a
matter for application to bound on JBoss=92s elements.

I have added and changed some elements to allow JBoss users to easily
install and run the Demo. For time being only JBoss 3.2.X is complete. I
will see if I can create the two lacking xml files for 3.0.X users.

The install.txt provides instruction for them.

For the tests, if both JBoss and HSql are used, the DDL commands are
added in the script.

Now, I=92m blocked by a general application failure. The demo is =
coherent

I've committed my EJB support changes. So I think I'm done for 0.9.1.

EJBs will again have their own BeanFactory, although how it's loaded is
parameterizable via the new BeanFactoryLoader strategy.

is useful, because you still want to cover the case of any new sessions 
being created.

[Springframework-developer] LocalSessionFactoryBean needs mechanism for setting Interceptor

Unless I'm missing something, there's no way when using the 
LocalSessionFactoryBean to set a Hibernate Interceptor instance on the 
Configuration the LocalSessionFactoryBean uses to create the 
SessionFactory. Can this be added?  With the present implementation I 
think the only use I can make of this class is copy-paste-modify, I 
can't even subclass and override afterPropertiesSet() since all the 
fields it needs are private...

basically it works. However, the getPathWithinServletMapping() method I
can't really test, because in the MockServlet*** classes, there's no
MockServletMapping yet (and I haven't got the time to add this before
the 0.9.1 release).

The fix works however for my application (for both URL-rewriting
requests and non-URL-rewriting requests). All other tests still succeed.

But, since I'm not able to test everything enough and don't know the
rest of the web stuff enough to know what the impact is, I am kind of
reluctant to add it, with the 0.9.1 release coming next week...

Is there somebody that can find the time to figure out everything still
works (or just says, yeah, it's ok ;-)?? The modified WebUtils and the
WebUtilsTestSuite are attached to the email...
