FYI, I've made a further 1.2.9 snapshot available: 1.2.9-20061231. This is
the actual release candidate zip for the official 1.2.9 release by the end
of this week.

Please give this snapshot a try in your Spring-1.2-based applications,
simply replacing the 1.2.8 jar with the 1.2.9 snapshot jar (ideally at
deployment time, to verify binary compatibility).

Hi everybody,

The Spring 1.2.9 release is just around the corner, scheduled for December
30th. Since we don't have automatic builds for the 1.2 branch, I've made the
current 1.2.9-20061222 snapshot available at:

  http://static.springframework.org/downloads/nightly

This is mainly a bug fix release for 1.2.8, along with quite a few
optimizations and doc clarifications. See the included changelog for the
full list of bug fixes and minor enhancements.

Please give this a try in your Spring-1.2-based applications, simply
replacing the 1.2.8 jar with the 1.2.9 snapshot jar and testing whether
everything still works for you (running your application' unit tests,
integration tests, etc). This will help us to ensure the quality of the
actual 1.2.9 release next week!

We're using the PropertyPlaceholderConfigurer quite a bit at work, and
I was thinking about ways to handle default values more elegantly.
When a property is not configured by a customer, usually some default
should be used.
The standard spring way seems to be to put a property map inside the
XML configuration file (as in
http://www.kleineikenscheidt.de/stefan/archives/2005/06/default-configuration-with-spring.html),
or to have two properties files, one with the defaults, and one for
customer customization.
However, that means some redundancy: Each placeholder is listed two or
three times, once in the list of defaults, once when it is assigned to
a bean property, and once when it is customized.
What I've come up with is this:
