Indeed; at some point we might want to support OGNL-like method =
invocations
and we would have made the expression language a lot more difficult to
parse, implement and also to read. Of course the JSP EL also supports
function invocations, using the foo:bar() syntax. Supporting a =
property(foo)
syntax might end up being a liability rather than an asset.

Rob,

in your system summary the JVM system property
"org.apache.xerces.xni.parser.XMLParserConfiguration"
is defined. This property overrides the same property
defined in xercesImpl.jar (META-INF/services/) which
references the (correct) class
"org.apache.xerces.parsers.StandardParserConfiguration".
The class referenced in your (manually set) system
property references the class
"org.apache.xerces.parsers.XIncludeParserConfiguration"
which is not available in Eclipse's Xerces
implementation.

I have successfully reproduced your error by adding
this invalid system property to the launch
configuration of an Eclipse workbench (first tab "(x)
Arguments", input field "VM Arguments").


You have to get rid of this invalid system property
(listed in Eclipse's system summary) to run Spring IDE
Beans UI. Maybe it's defined in your Eclipse shortcut
on the windows desktop (as commandline parameter
"-Dorg.apache.xerces.xni.parser.XMLParserConfiguration=org.apache.xerces.parsers.XIncludeParserConfiguration".

I didn't try that. It looked to me like the error was just in starting 
up successfully, but I'll give it another go with a bigger delay,

[Springframework-developer] CMT transactions with JTA, but no Spring TX

Jürgen,

I spent some time and created a test app under the autobuilds tree to 
verify the new code you put in to allow binding a Hibernate session to 
the JTA transaction in a CMT environment, with no Spring 
TransactionManager around. Essentially all the test does is call a 
Stateless EJB, which then verifies that two calls to 
HibernateTemplate.execute give the callback the same session. With no 
TransactionManagerLookup in the Hibernate config, the sessions are 
different. When the TransactionManagerLookup is added, the sessions are 
the same, so all seems to be working ok.

I also verified in the log the result when another test method throws a 
DataAccessException while in HibernateTemplate.execute, and the session 
does get properly unbound from the thread, and then closed().

The test app I created is called ejbtest, and presumably it can be used 
for any tests of this sort with EJBs. It uses Cactus to actually drive 
the tests, as that seemed the easiest.

That sounds like a good first step...we may need a Portlet specific 
controller/handler infrastructure since many of the "normal" web app 
handler mappings don't make sense is this context.  We can start 
building some services on top of FrameworkPortlet as soon as its ready 
then contribute ideas as we go along.

It has been run on windows in the past, but I think changes were made to th=

Autobuilds certainly works fine with JBoss and all the other supported=20

Have you ever run the autobuild stuff successfully on Windows with JBoss?

I had to fix up the autobuild.bat file first a bit. It wasn't that big a 
deal (now checked in) but wasn't in a working state either, which makes 
me think this stuff was never run on windows. Can you confirm that?

The exeption indicates a problem during JAXP
autoconfiguration. An unknown class
(XIncludeParserConfiguration) is referenced.  This
class does not belong to the Xerces distribution of
the Eclipse Xerces plugin (IBM maintenance release of
Xerces 2.0).

Strange, there seems to be a different Xerces
distribution in the classpath of the JDK your using
with Eclipse.

Which JDK do you use?
Did you add any Xerces jars in the
$JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext?

[Springframework-developer] Spring.NET

Mark Pollack and I would like to announce the Spring Framework .NET. This
project is currently in the planning stage, but Mark has already set up the
SF project (http://sourceforge.net/projects/springnet/) and we are
discussing strategy on the project mailing list. We're aiming for an initial
release of the basic IoC container, followed by AOP, followed by some
enterprise services. Of course many of the "enterprise services" appropriate
to .NET will be different from those relevant to J2EE. But the benefits of a
lightweight framework still apply. The implementation language will be C#.

I've been thinking about a .NET port of Spring for a while, and Mark started
some work last year. The immediate catalyst was an article by Sami Jaber on
dotnetguru, discussing Spring and other lightweight containers from the
viewpoint of .NET developers:

points out the value proposition regarding transaction management--as well
as the obvious IoC and AOP.

We feel that ideas from Spring can provide real value to .NET development.
The
existence of a .NET version of Spring will also be very helpful to the
significant number of developers who work on both platforms.

So: If you would like to volunteer, please speak up! So far we have 4
developers. Mark will be the project lead. We aim to apply the values that
have proven themselves so useful
in the J2EE project, especially TDD. It's vital that any project bearing the
Spring Framework name should meet our high quality standards.

I shouldn't need to say this, because religious disputes about platforms are
plain silly, but rest assured that:
- This will not distract from the focus on Spring J2EE
- No sale of souls is involved

Note btw that PicoContainer already has a .NET port, although I'm not sure
how far it's kept up to date. Of course, Pico covers only a fraction of the
scope of Spring, so a .NET version of Spring is a much greater challenge.
