I thought I replied to this, but looks like I didn't. I'm in favour of this being checked in, including groovy.jar. That's what I was thinking, that way I can have each class that needs the property editor attempt the registration if necessary. If I have a link to a portlet action that also changes the view mode, then the view mode will be changed before the handleRequest method is called. This means the handleRequest won't be called on the controller I would expect. EG: I have two PortletController's - one for edit mode and one for view mode. In the JSP for the edit mode I have a link to: <portlet:actionURL portletMode="view" /> When I execute that link, I was expecting the handleRequest method in my edit portlet controller to be called (since I'm in edit mode and I'm executing an action). What happens is that the mode change is processed first (ie, the portlet changes to view mode) and then the handleRequest method in my view portlet controller is executed. Is this a deliberate design decision? If not is it possible to implement it differently - or am in the minority about finding that confusing? Nick |

This madness would have led to duplicating the > View support > as well had it not been for Juergen's design proposal: > http://opensource.atlassian.com/confluence/spring/display/JSR1 68/SpringPortlet+module+design+discussion To get the spring tag libs to work in this model it looks like we need to make them aware of and compatible with the View bridge, or provide PortletMVC specific implementations. Thoughts? later. Bill Yes, I've read <http://opensource.atlassian.com/confluence/spring/display/JSR168/SpringPort let+module+design+discussion>. I thought the point of the bridge design is to "reuse the existing Servlet-based classes themselves as far as possible" and "reuse the entire view support of the web.servlet.view package, working with HttpServletRequest/Response at the View level" and I guess that's what made me think that the tag libs would be supported. I think that the ServletContext is supposed to be available to JSP views used from a Portlet. The spec says nothing about restricting it, and in any case, without a ServletContext JSP's are pretty useless. I'm quite familiar with the problems the duel Portlet* & Servlet* heirachy gives. That's why I quite like the bridge solution Spring uses - it seems a neat way around it. Nick |

While the portlet spec does leverage the servlet container, the APIs differ enough to make it difficult to support to Spring WebMVC directly. Which is why we currently have the View Servlet bridge. The main goal is to provide MVC framework similar to Spring WebMVC for the Portlet API. Portlets can be thought of as Servlets with additional lifecycle and constraints. They are essentially web applications with defined "modes" and are restricted to outputting markup that can be embedded in a final document. Portlets benefit from PortletMVC the same way Servlets benefit from WebMVC and a Spring layered architecture. The starting pointing was to create a DispatcherPortlet, the analog of DispatcherServlet. This initially led to the creation of many mirror objects from o.s.web.servlet.*. I simply ported many objects to the web.portlet.* package with the ServletAPI dependencies replaced with the PortletAPI. This madness would have led to duplicating the View support as well had it not been for Juergen's design proposal: http://opensource.atlassian.com/confluence/spring/display/JSR168/SpringPortlet+module+design+discussion To get the spring tag libs to work in this model it looks like we need to make them aware of and compatible with the View bridge, or provide PortletMVC specific implementations. Thoughts? later. Bill |

A bit late -- have been away for a few days -- but here is my input.
I like the autoconversion feature, no reason not to do it that I can
think of. We should also look at the reverse scenario since Oracle has
changed the behavior between 9i and 10g JDBC drivers for getObject on a
date field. I'll dig up the details tomorrow.

The Spring team is pleased to announce that the new Spring support
forums are live. The forums are available at:
http://forum.springframework.org
The new forum infrastructure will allow support questions to be answered
in a more efficient fashion, but with less chance of things slipping
through the cracks. Additionally, users may easily search for existing
answers to their questions, hopefully reducing effort for everybody.
It is expected that the use of the existing SourceForge forums and
SourceForge 'springframework-user' mailing list will be replaced by the
new forums, after an initial short trial period running in parallel. We
encourage all users to direct support questions to the new forums. While
we understand that some users do like mailing lists for support, it is
important to realize that consolidating to the new forum infrastructure
will reduce duplication, and save time for Spring developers, allowing
them to work more on code and documentation. The dev list will continue
to be used for spring development.
Note that while a default look and feel is set for new forum users, you
may from the preferences page of the site choose another template that
is more to your liking. 6-7 template variations have been installed.
Regards,
Colin

All,
I have committed a few more JMX features to the sandbox:
* JmxProxyFactoryBean - This is now working correctly and functions
with both the JDK and CGLIB proxies
* RequiredModelMBean Support - You can choose to use the
RequiredModelMBean class instead of Springs ModelMBeanImpl class
* Bean Autodetection - It is now possible for the metadata assembler
to autodetect beans in the bean factory that have the appropriate
metadata and it will register them automatically.
Plus I did a bit of refactoring to make testing simpler and I added a
bunch of additional tests.

Colin, I was thinking of having either JmxMBeanAdapter or JmxProxyFactoryBean register the PropertyEditor, that way the Spring core can remain blissfully unaware. Rob, For some Spring PropertyEditors, which convert to spring-specific classes, Spring just relies on the fact that if a class's package includes another class with the same name with the suffix 'Editor', it is automatically recognized and registered as a PropertyEditor (assuming it implements the latter, of course). For some other editors, such as the one that converts between a classname and a Class object, the container registers the editor itself. My feeling is that ideally the registration would happen automatically for the user. However, I can't think of a very clean way right now. The base container should probably not know about the JMX specific property editor... Colin Rob Harrop wrote: > All, > > I am working through some support classes for JMX. It should, but as you have found out it does not at the moment.
The intent is to have all the WebMVC View technology available in
PortletMVC. However, much of the View technology is dependent on
specifics of the Servlet API. To get around this we wrote a "bridge"
Servlet which PortletMVC delegates to for rendereing. This works ok for
simple JSTL views and allows one to use the Portlet taglib.
The problem now is that <spring:bind ...> is dependendant upon
WebApplicationContext...which is not available in PortletMVC, so we'll
have to figure out a way to also "bridge" the taglib. Essentially if we
are running in PortletMVC we need the tablibs to look for
PortletApplicationContext instead of WebApplicationContext or come up
with an abstraction for both and refactor the tablib.

Hi all, I posted an issue to the JIRA (http://opensource.atlassian.com/projects/spring/browse/SPR-255) to add the static initializer fix to an additional class for NoClassDefFoundErrors. I posted here too in hopes that this would make 1.1 final. Does anyone know why WebLogic seems to behave this way? Thanks, Dustin |

I've just applied your patch, to be part of Spring 1.1 final.

If Thomas has some special feedback, we can still incorporate it, of =
course.

Betreff: RE: [Springframework-developer] java.util.Date to java.sql.Date
I believe it would be appropriate. Version with those checks included =
(slightly modified for performance when type is not time related):
else if (sqlType =3D=3D Types.DATE){
if((inValue instanceof java.util.Date) &&
!(inValue instanceof java.sql.Date)) {
inValue =3D
new java.sql.Date(((java.util.Date)inValue).getTime());
}
ps.setObject(paramIndex, inValue, Types.DATE);
}
else if(sqlType =3D=3D Types.TIMESTAMP){
if((inValue instanceof java.util.Date) &&
!(inValue instanceof java.sql.Timestamp)) {
inValue =3D
new java.sql.Timestamp(((java.util.Date)inValue).getTime());
}
ps.setObject(paramIndex, inValue, Types.TIMESTAMP);
}
else if(sqlType =3D=3D Types.TIME){
if((inValue instanceof java.util.Date) &&
!(inValue instanceof java.sql.Time)) {
inValue =3D
new java.sql.Time (((java.util.Date)inValue).getTime());
}
ps.setObject(paramIndex, inValue, Types.TIME);
}

Sounds plausible! I'm inclined to add this extra check.
Would it be appropriate to add similar checks for java.sql.Time and =
java.sql.Timestamp too?
Thomas, Rod, others - any thoughts on this?

Subject: [Springframework-developer] java.util.Date to java.sql.Date
I'm constantly converting from util.Date to sql.Date in my Dao when I'm
passing my params to the MappingSqlQuery's execute method...not a huge
deal, its just annoying when I forget and then see it pop up at runtime.
I was wondering if spring could step in and do the conversion for me. I
believe this should really be a feature of the DB Driver, but at least
for Oracle, it complains when I try to bind a util date to a parameter
declared as a Types.DATE (stack trace snippet below). I realize that
with a sql date the time information should/will be truncated, but I
think that is the expected behavior anyway since I'm saying the type is
a Types.DATE.=20
I did some digging and found where it would be nice to have the
conversion done for me:
StatementCreatorUtils, line 106...something like
else if (sqlType =3D=3D Types.DATE && (inValue instanceof =
java.util.Date)) {
ps.setObject(paramIndex,
new java.sql.Date(((java.util.Date)inValue).getTime()));
}
...could be inserted.
Would this be possible? Or are there some deeper issues I'm not
thinking about. I'm pretty sure this would work well for Oracle, but
not sure about other DBs.
Thanks,
James
