Hi, I put the selector in there for when we have container-like JMS support. There are also some docs in the sandbox if you want to read more about it. Basically it allows you to apply JMS-selector SQL to any Java object. These can be normal pojo's or the jms message content itself. To use the library you plug in a 'value-adapter' to the parser so that it can evaluate the sql string against your object of choice. These can be POJOs, or a MapMessage or whatever. The 'mdb' configuation file can specify this string so that an incoming message/object is directed to a particular processing chain if the selector matched. I've found this to be a very effective means to organize processing of message in complex JMS apps. There are frequently so many different actions you want to on different message types that are delivered on the same destination but there are typically just 1 or 2 destinations. You therefore need some logic to branch off the single callback onMessage(message m) to handle each request. The JMS properties section can be used for this purpose but it is more of a subscription filtering technique and often people start putting every property of the object inside the property section just to get this functionality. I feel the selector addresses this issue nicely. There is a recent project from jakarta commons that offers similar functionality but it is based on XPath instead of sql. http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/jxpath/ Interested to hear your opinions... -Mark > +1 for removing it if noone objects > > > -----Original Message----- > From: spr...@li... > [mailto:spr...@li...]On Behalf Of > Keith Donald > Sent: Tuesday, October 12, 2004 5:49 PM > To: spr...@li... > Subject: [Springframework-developer] sanbox spring cleaning > > > > I've been doing some spring cleaning in the sandbox: what are the > org.springframework.selector package and related subpackages? I've hacked together a JMS provider of the remoting layer in Spring, which works like the HTTP, JAX-RPC & Caucho implementations but which uses JMS for the underlying networking code. By using JMS we can now load balance requests for a service across multiple service endpoints; so we can easily implement a cluster of servers complete with load balancing and auto fail-over. Currently this assumes a state-less service model. We may wish to implement something a little more clever for stateful services (and how to fail-over in a cluster of stateful services), but this is a first cut which should be quite useful for clusters of stateless services - we could layer on top some kind of stateful mechanism. Some JMS providers have features like 'exclusive queues' or 'message groups' which can be used to provide stateful-like routing of messages similar to those used in EJB containers for stateful session beans. The code is pretty straightforward; just 3 classes, so I took the cheeky approach of checking it straight into the main code branch rather than leaving it spend time in the sandbox first; we can easily move it into the sandbox if need be. Where possible the makes use of the existing JmsTemplate code. To simplify the implementation code I used the QueueRequestor, but we could tidy that up later and use explicit send() / receive() instead to be able to support configurable timeouts and timeToLive values on a remote request etc. Any feedback or thoughts are most welcome James ------- http://radio.weblogs.com/0112098/ |

Hi, after the problem raised in the forum : http://forum.springframework.org/viewtopic.php?t=1385 , I checked this a bit and noticed that all the mechanisms developped in the DispatcherServlet to get the last modification date and such were relying on the fact that getLastModified in called on DispatchedServlet, ok. However, the jsr152 implementation of tomcat (which is probably a common one) call the getLastModified in the service(HttpServletRequest,HttpServletResponse), which is overidden in the FrameworkServlet, and no code related to getLastModified is called in the overidden method. I propose to reenable the getLastModified call by adding in the service method of FrameworkServlet the code used to handle the last modification, hance the proposed attached patch. If I haven't forgot something, which would explain that it should work as it is now but that I and the forum poster didn't see, please yell at me, else I'll open a jira issue to remember it. Regards Olivier |

Also be aware of some existing mechanisms e.g.: > Having introduced Spring in our projects, I was faced with complains about > writing nearly the same configuration over and over again, e.g. applying an > interceptor to many beans Consider using BeanNameAutoProxyCreator or DefaultAdvisorAutoProxyCreator. Or a parent proxy that defines the interceptors. or setting a session factory into many DAOs. Consider using autowiring in this case. Child > beans solve some problems but there should be a more explicit mechanism not > a reuse of the <bean> tag. Suggestions welcome. Rgds Rod |

No, the resources are different. In my example the two bean definitions are in
different resources.

It should if it was the same resource. But I expect that if there is only one
bean definition for the 'dao' , there should be only one singleton instance.
Because XMLBeanFactory implements HierachicalBeanFactory!

Hi,
Are you loading the same resource twice? i.e. are parentResource and
childResource the same? AFAIK the "singleton" or "prototype" definition
only applies within a particular BeanFactory and defines the behaviour
of calls to getBean. So if you load the same set of beans twice, you
will end up with two "singleton" beans called "dao".
The child BF will only delegate to the parent if it can't find a bean of
the given name in its own list, so if the parent contains an identical
set of beans to the child then each will always return its own copy of a
particular bean.
Luke.

Hello, There was a topic on the forums requesting an RSS feed. The general consensus was to reduce the amount of skins the forum supports so that adding new plugins would be easier. The RSS plugin would really open up the forum and I believe it would be a small step that would have huge benefits. I for one know that I would get much more use out of the forums if I could see the new topics in my feed reader. I would also love to do the integration. I know everyone is busy but it's a small way I can help. Please let me know if this is something we can add, and I'd gladly do the work. Thanks! Seth |

Hi,
no answer so far :-(
Maybe my question wasn't clear enough.
I have two BeanFactories:
parentContext:
<bean id="dao" class="example.DaoImpl"/>
childContext:
<bean id="service" class="example.ServiceImpl"/>
BeanFactory parent = new
XMLBeanFactory(parentResource);
Dao dao1 = (Dao) parent.getBean("dao");
BeanFactory child = new
XMLBeanFactory(childResource,parent);
Dao dao2 = (Dao ) child.getBean("dao");
--> Result dao1 and dao2 are NOT the same. I expected
that they must be the same
if the bean is defined as a singleton.
In AbstractBeanFactory.geBean(String name, Object[]
args) you don't search a instance in the
singletoncache
of the parent beanfactory. Why? Is it an error ?
Regards
Andreas

Alef I think such a minor incompatibility would be no problem in 1.2. After all, it's a trivial change. But not acceptable in 1.1.2, which will be in a couple of weeks. That is definitely a bug. The Portal should handle keeping the request
attributes separate for each instance of the portlet on the page, so it is
probably a bug in the Portal. It is possible that we are doing something
weird in Spring that breaks this however.
What Portal are you using?

I've had to use the portlet-session-for-communication hack before, and I
really don't like it, although sometimes it does seem to be required.
The rest of the changes look very useful.

Hi, I'm currently using the CookieLocaleResolver for locale resolving. It does what I want it to as long as a cookie has been set, but returns whatever the client sends in the Accept-Language header otherwise. What I really need is a way to specify a default locale for the resolver, so that if no cookie exists, that locale is returned regardless of what the client is requesting. I have attached a small patch that adds this functionality (while maintaining backwards compatability). It would be great if it were included. Cheers, Gorm |

No, everything works as expected for the result stored in session. It's
only the result propageted as request attribute in
request.setAttribute(MODEL_AND_VIEW, result);
which is picked up by the render action of every portlet window.
So everything would be fine if we always use the portlet session for
result propagation, but I don't want to enforce the usage of a session
just for result propagation.
Maybe a compromise would be to rely solely on the session if
'storeResultInSession' is true (since than a session is used anyway). In
this case the multiple window problem could be avoided. If you don't use
a session, the portlet window is refreshed to the initial form view
anyway, so there is not much point in creating multiple portlet windows
anyway.
The changed code is appended.

More info on www.jexcel.org. Doesn't seem to have a huge community, but has been around for quite some time and its stable...=20 Since a couple of months, we're using it in projects instead of POI. The latter has major issues with including images and jexcel doesn't. It's also a bit faster from my experiences...=20 Whether or not to include it in the core, I don't know. Jxl.jar is about 500k, Spring's integration code is just one class (resembling AbstractExcelView). About the extensions package: I can't make my mind up about this. On the one hand I don't like it, since it raises the bar a bit for people that want to start using Spring--which extensions should I have, do I need the extensions package, etceterea... Have a look at Avalon. I never quite liked the structure of there stuff (merlin, logkit, framework, fortress, phoenix, excalibur, etcetera, arghhhh. Also, it really is about the dependencies, isn't it? On the other hand, we wouldn't want to end up with spring.jar being 3 mb... If we could start over, I'd choose for having the core container including AOP (so no JDBC, Hibernate, JDO, etcetera) in a separate project and all the integration stuff in another project... But I guess we can't change that anymore ;-). Anyway, I overlooked the fact that we're going to have spring-1.1.2 released mid-November; so this means I can't introduce any non-backwards-compatible changes until then (if at all). I'll commit the code to the sandbox for now... I saw the FAQ question. I think it's best to create a sticky topic, but it should be moderated a bit, I think the admins should do that. About the task list, I don't think people use the 'start progress' feature JIRA has, which works really well. If people start working on a bug, they can indicate they've started progress. This can only be doen by the current assignee however. I think the current assigne should just check whether or not a patch has been added to the bug, before starting progress and also, actually *use* the start progress feature.
