Hi, in our app we have the following TransactionInterceptor defined:
<bean id="txnInterceptor" class="org.springframework.transaction.interceptor.TransactionInterceptor">
<property name="transactionManager"><ref local="transactionManager"/></property>
<property name="transactionAttributeSource">
<!-- I think this uses the spiffy TransactionAttributeSourceEditor, obviating the need for a seperate
TransactionAttributeSource definition in simple cases - but you have to register it as a
custom editor - which I've done (towards top of file). The thing that parses it only
takes one "value", but you can have multiple entries as long as each is on it's own line.
Don't forget to add the bean names you want this applied to to the autoProxyCreator below. -->
<value>
com.newbay.mixxe.command.AbstractCommand.executeInTransaction=PROPAGATION_REQUIRED
com.newbay.callbacks.ICallbackManager.noteDelivered=PROPAGATION_REQUIRED
</value>
</property>
</bean>
Now, I know that I've used the TransactionAttributeSourceEditor, but this would still apply if
a bean defined the TransactionAttributeSource seperately.
It seems to me like it would make sense for this class (or possibly, a subclass) to also
implement the Advisor interface (or PointcutAdvisor), since the TxnAttrSource guys pretty much define
pointcuts. Now, I don't know what other people do, but it seems like I have two options:
A) Take the performance hit if I just use the interceptor directly, like in a beanNameAutoProxyCreator or something.
This is obviously not good, and could potentially lead to obscure bugs where the txn seems to be in place, but isn't
started, or something.
B) Define advisors for all the relevant class+method guys. While this has the most desireable effect, it duplicates the DRY
principle and could lead to lots of extra configuration.
Now, it's possible that I'm approaching this whole thing incorrectly, or my understanding is whacked out, or I've missed a better
way to share things like advisors, etc, etc...

Roberto, would you be kind enough to raise this in JIRA (http://opensource.atlassian.com/projects/spring/) and assign it to me - = I'll take a look tonight. Betreff: [Springframework-developer] Bug in velocity macro
The springFormSingleSelect contain a bug.
#macro( springFormSingleSelect $path $options $attributes )
#springBind($path)
<select name=3D"${status.expression}" ${attributes}>
#foreach($option in $options.keySet())
<option value=3D"${option}"
---->> #if($status.value && $status.value =3D=3D $option)
selected=3D"true"
#end>
${options.get($option)}
</option>
#end
</select>
#end
If $status.value contains the string "false", the condition is never
evaluated.
Note that checkbox variant of the macro does not check the variable
existence itself.

Hello, The javadoc for tearDown() in AbstractDependencyInjectionSpringContextTests says "Reload the context if its marked as dirty", yet the implementation merely delegates to onTearDown, which is an emtpy method. Either the javadoc should be rewritten, or tearDown() should implement the dirty checking? Seth,
I've just tried the following on Resin 2.1.11 and Tomcat 5.0.27, and it =
works for me:
<spring:nestedPath path=3D"person">
<%=3D nestedPath %>
<spring:nestedPath path=3D"addresses[0]">
<%=3D nestedPath %>
<spring:bind path=3D"street">
Street: <input type=3D"text" name=3D"<%=3D =
status.getExpression() %>" value=3D"<%=3D status.getValue() %>">
</spring:bind>
<%=3D nestedPath %>
</spring:nestedPath>
<%=3D nestedPath %>
</spring:nestedPath>
Resin doesn't reset the nestedPath variable value to "person." again =
after the end of the inner nestedPath tag, but Tomcat does even that...

Subject: [Springframework-developer] Nested <spring:nestedPath> Tags in
Tomcat 5.0.29
Just a head's up,
It appears that Tomcat 5.0.27 and 5.0.29 (at least) don't support
nested tags of the same type that export the same variable (as defined
in the .tld file).
The Jasper JspC compiler generates Java source code that can't be
compiled. There is a variable that is out of scope of the location
it's being used. I've tried different <variable> <scope>'s just in
case.
Removing the <variable> element from the .tld for the nestedPath tag
fixes the problem. I don't think that element is deprecated quite
yet, but it sounds like it's only there for scriptlets.
I've filed a bug report with Tomcat, so we'll see where that goes.
Any others attempt to use a nested <spring:nestedPath> tag? Any luck?
Thanks,
Seth

I've uploaded some PHP pages to the project space at sourceforge which sh= ow the results of the continuous builds/test runs taking place on the compil= e farm. It's working fairly well, but there are issues with not being able= to move files between the compile farm servers and any other sourceforge mac= hine. So at present, my home machine connects once per hour to the compile far= m, retrieves the files and uploads them to the webserver. I've dropped a mail to Thomas to see if we can figure out something bette= r between us, but for now you can take a look at the results at:=20 http://springframework.sourceforge.net/test/ Eventually, I'll get the autobuilds results (app server testing) on here = too - I have now finally got at least one of the CF machines to work with Tomca= t5 and the JPetStore autobuild app! Hello, Would it be possible to provide a way to destroy a specific instance of a prototype bean? I've implemented a RecreateableMixinAdvisor that introduces an interface with a single method, recreate(), on advised objects. Using a HotSwappableTargetSource, I create a singleton bean that targets an instance of a prototype bean. When you call recreate(), a new prototype instance is swapped in, and the old one is swapped out and destroyed after a specified wait time. This all works fine, except there's no decent way to destroy the old instance. I ended up copy-pasting AbstractBeanFactory's invokeCustomDestroyMethod(), which does what I want, but is not accessible. It would be nice if invokeCustomDestroyMethod()'s implementation could be reused (e.g. move to BeanUtils), but since I have the bean factory, bean name and bean instance available, maybe the bean factory could provide a destroyPrototypeBeanInstance(String beanName, Object bean) method instead? This method could then use the destroy-method specified on the prototype bean definition. Of course, the bean factory would have no way to verify the relation between the provided beanName and bean... In case you're wondering, we're using this with a Commons DBCP data source, but there may be other use cases. Thanks, Tom. |

Just a head's up, It appears that Tomcat 5.0.27 and 5.0.29 (at least) don't support nested tags of the same type that export the same variable (as defined in the .tld file). The Jasper JspC compiler generates Java source code that can't be compiled. There is a variable that is out of scope of the location it's being used. I've tried different <variable> <scope>'s just in case. Removing the <variable> element from the .tld for the nestedPath tag fixes the problem. I don't think that element is deprecated quite yet, but it sounds like it's only there for scriptlets. I've filed a bug report with Tomcat, so we'll see where that goes. Any others attempt to use a nested <spring:nestedPath> tag? Any luck? Thanks, Seth -- <a href="http://www.picklematrix.net/foaf.rdf">Seth Ladd's FOAF</a> <a href="http://www.foaf-project.org/">What is FOAF?</a> |

Hi, I am working with spring-rcp and have encountered one provoking bug. 'BeanPropertyAccessStrategy' class has two fields 'beanHolder' and 'beanWrapper' linked with the same parent object (beanHolder.getValue() and beanWrapper.getWrappedInstance()). This fields really need to be linked to same object. But this synchronization may be got broken. So we need here more safe coding. The patch contains one way to provide such safety. This is only example, such manipulations should be done every time when the 'beanWrapper' field is used. Best regards, Sergey Bogatyrjov. |

I've just changed NotWritablePropertyException's error message to "Bean =
property 'myProperty' is not writable or has an invalid setter method: =
Does the parameter type of the setter match the return type of the =
getter?", which should give an indication of what could be wrong. =
Similar for NotReadablePropertyException.

Thanks for raising this issue!

I have had an issue where a spring configured property is "set" with a
more specific type than the getter-method returns. The reason is that
the getter method implements an interface and is required to return a
specific type. The net result is that the getter and setter method take
in/return different class types. My getter and setter looked like the
code below:
public Component getView() {
return view;
}
public void setView( Container view ) {
this.view =3D view;
}
This is probably not legal, JavaBeans style access, and my solution
ended up being renaming the method in the interface. However, the error
message I received was confusing at best, since the property "view" is
obviously writeable based on the code pasted above. The error message
was:
org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanCreationException: Error creating

exception is org.springframework.beans.NotWritablePropertyException:

The getter was not even required for spring, as I only set this
property.
I have two questions:
1) Is this behavior desirable? Should Spring throw an exception if the
getter and setter's class type does not match. This is probably not
really valid JavaBean-style properties, but obviously you can still get
and set the "view" property. In my case, I was not even "getting" the
property using spring, but only setting it.
2) If this is the desired behavior, should the error message displayed
be clearer? I have seen this error in the past and it usually means
that there is no setter method or the setter method had non-public
access. It seems like this error message should read more like
"Property 'view' is not a valid bean property." - or something like
that.

Rob,
=20
First of all, thanks for the suggestions!
=20
The problem is that the Velocity tool instances cannot be shared if they =
are supposed to respect the locale for the current request, because they =
need to keep a reference to the current locale. Some of them, like =
LinkTool, aren't even thread-safe in their base implementation.
=20
That's why we currently create new instances for each render process, =
under the specific model attribute names. We couldn't pass those in as =
existing instances to the Velocity context, at least not in general.
=20
What we could do beyond the current support is to allow for specifying =
model attribute / tool class pairs. A single "toolAttributes" property =
of type java.util.Properties should be sufficient for this, with the =
model attribute name as key and the tool class name as value. I've just =
added such a property to VelocityView, which works nicely with MathTool =
and similarly general tools.
=20
For locale-aware versions of standard Velocity tools, you need to =
subclass each and every one of them. I currently prefer to offer all of =
those as special "xxxToolAttribute" properties in VelocityView. There =
aren't any other than DateTool and NumberTool anyway in Velocity Tools =
1.1 anyway, and for any custom locale-aware tools it should be feasible =
to subclass VelocityView accordingly.
=20
Static attribute values can already be exposed in a generic way, via =
AbstractView's "attributes" and "attributesCSV" properties. This should =
work for VelocityViews too, so I don't see a need for extra facilities =
on VelocityView that just serve to expose such values too.
=20
On this occasion, I've just added a VelocityToolboxView subclass that =
allows a "toolboxConfigLocation" to be specified, automatically loading =
a Velocity Tools toolbox XML file and all defined tools in the specified =
scopes. ViewTools like LinkTool are properly supported there (they =
aren't in plain VelocityView), and values can be defined ther etoo.
=20
VelocityToolboxView also adds a check for tools specified as =
"toolAttributes", detecting ViewTools and initializing them with an =
appopriate ViewContext. It creates a special ChainedContext for this, =
passing it to ViewTool "init" methods if necessary. So such tools can be =
defined on VelocityView itself too, as alternative to a Velocity Tools =
toolbox XML file.
=20
VelocityToolboxView is a separate class mainly to avoid a required =
dependency on the view package of Velocity Tools in VelocityView itself. =
VelocityView has to keep working with plain Velocity in the classpath. =
The DateTool and NumberTool dependencies in VelocityView are purely =
optional, so don't break this rule.=20

Betreff: Re: [Springframework-user] Velocity Tools and Spring MVC
Shouldn't it be possible to expose additional helpers
to velocity via configuration instead of needing to
sub-class VelocityView?
Couldn't VelocityView & VelocityViewResolver have
methods similar to:
setBooleanTools(Map tools);
setNumberTools(Map tools);
setStringTools(Map tools);
setObjectTools(Map tools);
(Better names welcome!)
Then additional tools can be made available to every
velocity template via VelocityViewResolver
configuration, much like format, date and number tools
are now. The existing method of exposing format, date
and number tools could even be deprecated since the
new methods above could be used to do the same.
By allowing these tools to be set using the config
file, we can take advantage of Springs bean post
processors to do things like:
<prop key=3D"debug" value=3D"${debug}"/>
Which would allow the tempates to obtain data from the
same property file used by the rest of the
application.
Also, while the above is being done, i18n support in
velocity date/number tools is nice in spring because
the framework set's the locale. Could an interface
called VelocityLocaleAwareTool with a single method of
setLocale(Locale locale) be developed? Then any tool
which supports i18n could implement this interface.
Spring could check if the tools in the Object based
tools support the interface, and if so automatically
set the locale. The existing local support for the
number and date tool could be re-factored to take
advantage of the new interface as well.
This all would make adding tools to Velocity a lot
easier, and add standardized support for i18n aware
tools in spring.

Hi all, I am following this discussion with great interest, because my coworker=20= and I have been tossing back and forth some ideas of having a=20 threadbound context for our project as well. Hi, I would like to ask if it's possible to disable anonymous posts on the wiki, since I now enjoy the fun of a daily task to clean up all spam from the pages. See eg. http://opensource.atlassian.com/confluence/spring/display/RCP/Home Pieter |

I am happy to fix the no-arg constructor problem with CGLIB proxies=20 tomorrow if we can decide on a way to extend ProxyFactoryBean. For more=20 info on this issue read SPR-285 on JIRA. Obviously the latter is simplest, and avoids HttpSession > dependency, at the possible expense of the user experience or > requirements. Spring already has the LocaleResolver mechanism, which is pluggable, with different variations existing, 3 of which fall back to using the locale specified by the request if the main one fails (i.e. there is no cookie, when using the CookieLocaleResolver. I think it makes sense that any scheme which passes a locale down to the service layer ensures that this is, or at least it's possible for it to be, the same locale after as you would get by using the configured LocaleResolver from the web layer. But this actually potentially get's tweaked by the web controller itself (by calling setLocal() for example). This is why I suggested that what gets bound (in one variation at least) is actually an object holding and delegating to the real LocaleResolver and the request. This could then be bound conveniently (for Spring MVC) via a HandlerInterceptor. For the non-Spring MVC case you would probably do it via a generic servlet filter, which binds an object supporting the same interface (LocaleAccessor?). Even in that case there could be a real LocaleResolver and request backing it, or alternately something more static... > > Another issue to consider is the integration with rich clients. It may make sense to make a class for this purpose for Spring. If Spring does adopt some type of generic context notion, I strongly encourage you to take a look at the Context notion provided by the Morph framework. It is a very simple interface, yet it provides the methods needed to implement a Map, which is nice and generic for passing between tiers. The base class for implementers of Context, called BaseContext, implements Map. There are also other mechanisms in Morph to expose a Context as a Map. http://morph.sourceforge.net/apidocs/net/sf/morph/context/Context.html Matt |
