From a quick look this looks pretty promising.

Does org.springframework.web.portlet.mvc.SimpleFormController replace
org.springframework.web.portlet.SimplePortletFormController?

If not then when should SimplePortletFormController be prefered?

Yes, I agree this would be a good change and I think it should be made.

This zip contains some (many) changes to the CVS code.
Mainly the form handling code is affected, trying to build a form 
controller hierarchy similiar to the servlet tree.
A new controller type is ActionFormController for forms requiring 
processing in the action phase, e.g. to call 
ActionResponse.sendRedirect(String), 
ActionResponse.setPortletMode(PortletMode), or link 
ActionResponse.setWindowState(WindowState).
A controller extending this is RedirectFormController.

Another new class is ParameterControllerMapping to map controllers by a 
given request parameter, and ParameterMappingInterceptor to intercept 
those parameters in ActionRequests and forward it to the according 
RenderRequest.

The code works for me but needs some more testing and documentation.

Generally it might be necessary to change some method signatures in base 
classes from using ActionRequest/Response or RenderRequest/Response to 
use the more general PortletRequest/Response. Then implementing 
controllers have more freedom to choose wether the processing will take 
place mainly in the render phase (as proposed in the original code) or 
in the action phase (as implementd by ActionFormController). After 
implementing a few portlets I can imagine the need for portlets doing 
more work in the action phase and forward the result to the render phase 
as parameter or even in the portlet session.
In addition the next version of the portlet specification might relax 
the communication constraints between action and render phases (e.g. by 
allowing to set RenderReuqest attributes).  The proposed changes will

Hello,

I found out what the problem was, and I still maintain it's a Tomcat bug.

Apparently, if you have the body that has <spring:nestedPath> inside
(as Juegen has below), and that body is wrapped in a tag implemented
as a tagfile, then Tomcat's Jasper Jsp compiler will generate an
error.

I'm not sure, but I think this scenario is support.  I should be able
to use <spring:nestedPath> inside a tags.  For instance:

<tags:myTagFile>
<spring:nestedPath>
  <spring:nestedPath />
</spring:nestedPath>
</tags:myTagFile>

Will not work with Tomcat/Jasper.  Remove the tag files, and it works.

Hope this helps others avoid the same problem in the future,

SimplePortletFormController to fix the problem he discusses below. I don't
think this has been applied, but it looks like a good change to me.

Hello all,

I developed a new property editor called
TokenizingEditor.  It will convert Strings to a
String[] or to any implementation of Collection, and
back.

It is ideal for situations where you have a list of
items in a textarea separated by some token.

Can become String[] strArray = {"123", "456", "789"}
or can become List strList = new LinkedList();
strList.add("123");
strList.add("456");
strList.add("789");

by doing:
binder.registerCustomEditor(List.class, new
TokenizingEditor(" ", false, " ", LinkedList.class));

The implementation of TokenizingEditor, and a junit
test class are included.  I took the liberty of
placing this in the Spring package structure already.
The file is a zip file, but ends in .zzz because yahoo
won't allow sending of anything ending with .zip for
some reason.

If this could get into the 1.1.3 release that would be
great!

[Springframework-developer] JDK 1.3 Compat

All,

There is a post of the forum that I have been trying to solve regarding 
1.3 compat. I pointed the user at CVS and he has downloaded a 1.1.3 
snapshot but he says he still has problems with 1.3 compat. The full 
details are at http://forum.springframework.org/viewtopic.php?p=10053#10053.

Don't know if we want to get this sorted for 1.1.3, but I am out tonight 
and all day tomorrow so I can't look at until Sunday and I'm off to 
Belgium then.

FWIW I used exactly this mechanism lately on a project using Tapestry & 
Spring & Hibernate; it lets any locale specific code anywhere in your 
code base just work without complex wiring of locale-holding interfaces 
all over the code.

Our main use case was that the entity model contains i18n text so 
depending on the local of the current thread, reference data is 
automatically translated on views etc. e.g. on a Currency or Location 
object, the getName() method will return the translated name for the 
current thread when its used in a template. Ditto for most of the rest 
of the reference data in the system and formatting of all 
numbers/dates/currencies. The Tapestry engine (or dispatch servlet in 
springs case) then just sets up the thread local on each request, and 
all the locale specific code just works like a charm. This leads to a 
really neat, almost invisible i18n mechanism throughout the code 
without excessive wiring.

If you ever really need to explicitly pass in a Locale to some code, 
you can - but by default you can use the thread local approach.

Whilst it often feels like a static ThreadLocal is a bit of a hack, for 
something like Locale it seems a neat & simple solution.

No - I prefer the thread local approach; works like a charm. The fact 
that the locales are immutable & intern'd objects with no lifecycle 
also kinda helps too :). For most other things, I'd recommend avoiding 
ThreadLocals :)

forms. Also I added a PortletControllerMapping to map by request parameters.

One general problem:
In the current CVS version form handling takes place totally in the 
render phase, request parameters being forwarded by the action phase.
This approach does not work in all cases. E.g. if you want to redirect 
to another URL the response.sendRedirect(URL) call has to be made on the 
ActionResponse.

The code is working for me, but not production ready and certainly needs 
some clenup.
